An endangered, rare Sumatran plant that has been patiently waiting to bloom for 18 years is developing a flower bud and will soon send a perfume odor of rotting flesh. The Amorphophallus titanum, also known as the Corpse Flower from the smell it omits during peak bloom, will be flowering sometime between June 26 and July 4 at the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory in Saint Paul.
A 24-year-old Roberts woman was pulled over last Friday night for speeding in the 300 block of East Division Street. The officer who stopped her claimed to smell marijuana in her car. The woman said no, it wasn’t pot. Her boyfriend, however, was fond of smoking cigars. Here, and she pulled a cigar stub from her car’s ashtray as proof. No, no, the officer said. That’s not exactly what I smell.
UW-River Falls Plant and Earth Sciences Professor Brian Smith had an old car that he’s used for years for campus delivery work upended and wrecked by vandals over the weekend. Smith said he is so disgusted by this senseless act that he’s offering a reward for the capture and conviction of those responsible.
