THE VIEW FROM MY WINDOW The Peculiars - a book review
Several weeks ago I received in the mail an uncorrected proof of a soon-to-be-released book , The Peculiars, written by a friend of mine, Maureen Doyle McQuerry. How fun it was to hold her book in my ... Posted on 4/17/12 at 6:48 AM
OH LOOK! A SHINY THING Revealing Swimming Suits
I have not worn a two-piece swimsuit since I was about 4. It was a pink bikini with little black polka dots, and I can't remember liking it or hating it; it allowed me to swim, and apart from that, I ... Posted on 2/3/10 at 12:00 AM
REPRINT 1944, 1945: The Year in Review, Cartoon Style
Note the housing problem in the bottom right in this Year in Review from New Year's 1945. I guess some things never change.

HEALTHBEAT 2009: The health year in review
If the annual top-10 lists are any indication, health care reform and the emergence of the H1N1 novel influenza virus were among the biggest health happenings this past year.

NEW YORK — During a recent weekend in New York, we were fortunate to see a “hot ticket” Broadway show, “The Heiress,” a revival of the 1947 drama, its popular success now due to current star power with Dan Stevens, Jessica Chastain and David Strathairn in the lead roles.
It is not easy for any band or artist to cover The Beatles. They were one of the rare bands that come along and get it right the first time through. So reviewing an album of Beatles covers will naturally be as much of a mixed bag as the album itself.
WORTHINGTON — Nobles County 4-H’ers will showcase their clothing and quilting projects and performing arts presentations during a public Fashion Review and Performing Arts show at 7 p.m. today in the Fine Arts Theater at Minnesota West Community and Technical College, Worthington campus.
Udermann said office short-staffed to handle workload
WORTHINGTON — Nobles County Commissioners on Tuesday received a request from Assessor Joe Udermann to review staffing levels in the assessor’s office. Currently, a staff of three is cross-trained to work with individuals and complete property inspections. Both Jackson and Cottonwood counties have a staff of six, and each has fewer parcels than Nobles County.
WORTHINGTON — A gravel pit in Westside Township that was permitted for six years came under review Wednesday night by the Nobles County Planning and Zoning Commission after neighbors complained about a lack of dust control and maintenance to the township roads its gravel trucks travel.
After years of working with one another, it should come as no surprise that the two biggest names in hip-hop in the past decade (whom also worked with one another on certain songs) would join forces in creating a hip-hop super duo: Jay-Z and Kanye West.
OKOBOJI, Iowa — Okoboji Summer Theater has chosen a blockbuster as its season’s final production. Its performance of “Beauty and the Beast” crackles with energy and showcases a fine troupe of singers and dancers.
Based on a French fable, the stage version of “Beauty and the Beast” was preceded by Disney’s animated movie version, released in 1991.
OKOBOJI, Iowa — “One can lie, but the truth is more interesting.” The truth seems to be what each character is hiding in the mysterious play, “The Chalk Garden” by Enid Bagnold. The cast at the Okoboji Summer Theatre embodied these richly written characters and ended to an instant standing ovation in one of the last plays of the season. The many plot twists will have audiences engaged from start to finish.
OKOBOJI, Iowa — Currently playing at Okoboji Summer Theatre (OST), the aptly titled “See How They Run” by the late Philip King is British farce on the gallop. Five of the characters race across the stage, out to the garden, back to the living room and into the kitchen; all of them appear to be clergy. But which one is not really a man of the cloth?
MINNEAPOLIS — Although the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis is best known as the place to see Shakespeare and classic drama, Guthrie also knows exactly how to stage a perfect comedy. The current “When We Are Married” by British playwright J.B. Priestley (continuing through Aug. 30) is probably my all-time favorite of various comedies I’ve seen there over the years.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — You could think of "Paper Heart" as sort of a benevolent version of the Sacha Baron Cohen model, with its mixture of documentary and fiction. Only instead of providing raunchy satire or exposing people's prejudices, it seems all Charlyne Yi wants to do is sweetly entertain.
