In freight train derailment, spill contained, track fixed

PARKERS PRAIRIE –– Minnesota officials have reduced their estimate of how much Canadian crude oil spilled Wednesday when a train derailed in Otter Tail County. The track was cleaned off, fixed and back in use by about noon Thursday.

Nobles County Sheriff’s deputies, Bigelow Fire Department members and railroad personnel await the arrival of a railroad official Wednesday following an accident involving a train and an agricultural sprayer. The collision occurred shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday at the railroad crossing on 320th Street, where the current Minnesota 60 detour begins north of Bigelow. No one was injured in the accident.

Train hits tractor

Windom Towing operator Jed Knutson loads debris onto a flatbed on 390th Avenue after a Union Pacific train hit a semi-tractor and trailer loaded with corn that was pulling into Heron Lake BioEnergy Thursday morning. The crash split the trailer in half, spilling corn down the track, but the driver was not injured. A Union Pacific official on the scene was asked about the approximate speed of the train and replied “No comment,” then said, “Stay away from the tracks. We don’t want any more incidents.” There was no stop arm at the crossing.
