WORTHINGTON — Today marks Veterans Day, the special day set aside to honor our veterans — the men and women of the United States who sacrificed their time, and even their lives, so that future generations of Americans could live in the land of the free.
What was it like?
What was it like in the trenches? What was it like in all those places whose names have faded in the dusty recesses of memory, places like Ypres and Gallipoli, Verdun and the Marne? What was it like to fight the war that was supposed to make the world safe for democracy?

WASHINGTON — Some veterans were lucky enough to be accompanied by family members on their Honor Flight trip. Some insisted on it.
But for one guardian, the event was twice as nice after both her grandfathers were allotted places on the journey.
The memorial consists of 56, 17-foot pillars that represent the 48 states of 1945, the District of Columbia, the Alaska and Hawaii territories and Commonwealths of the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
