Sibley church observes German New Year’s tradition

SIBLEY, Iowa — Following the 10 a.m. worship service on Sunday, Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church will serve a German New Year’s traditional pancake meal called Speck ’n’ Dicken. It is made with meal and flavored with anise.

Serving begins at 11 a.m. A free-will offering will be taken.

Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church is located at 704 Poplar Drive.

St. Mary’s to host session on DAPA for immigrants

WORTHINGTON — On Jan. 4, the Church of St. Mary in Worthington will host an information session on Deferred Action for Parental Accountability (DAPA), the executive order issued by President Obama that will allow undocumented immigrants who are parents of U.S. citizen children to apply to remain in the United States.

Attorneys from the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota will be on hand to provide information and answer questions beginning at 1 p.m. Jan. 4 at St. Mary’s School, 1206 Eighth Ave.

All immigrants who may qualify are encouraged to attend.

Financial Peace University coming to First UM

WORTHINGTON — First United Methodist Church, 408 11th St., will offer Financial Peace University for nine weeks beginning Jan. 12.

FPU, created by American financial author Dave Ramsey, teaches God’s way of handling money through videos, class discussions and interactive small group activities. It presents biblically-based, practical steps to take participants from where they are to where they’ve dreamed they could be. The plan teaches people how to get rid of debt, manage their money and spend and save wisely.

FPU classes will meet for an hour and a half each session, beginning at 5:30 p.m. each Monday.

Mountain Lake Gospel Singers to present concert

WINDOM — The Mountain Lake Gospel Singers will present a concert at 3 p.m. Jan. 11 at the Windom Evangelical Free Church Worship Center in Windom.

A free-will offering will be taken.

Coffee and cookies will be served after the program.

Mark calendar for Spaghetti Supper at Westminster

WORTHINGTON — The 14th annual Spaghetti Supper, sponsored by the ACTS (Active Christians Together in Service) Task Force, will be served from 5 to 8 p.m. Jan. 9 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 230 Clary St.

The meal will feature alll-you-can-eat spaghetti, garlic bread, relishes, dessert and beverage, all for a suggested donation.
