Sibley prepares for festival's new events

SIBLEY, Iowa -- Chrissi Wiersma hopes several new events at this weekend's Good Ole Summertime Festival in Sibley will turn into annual ones.

Wiersma was hired as director of the Sibley Chamber of Commerce last August, and in that role, she's tried to inject some excitement into the city's celebration.

"We're trying to promote Sibley a little better than we have in the past," she said. "In past years, it's pretty much been just the parade and a couple of other things. With the truck pulls and the street dance, we're hoping to bring people in who wouldn't normally come to Sibley."

The truck pulls, scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Osceola County Fairgrounds, will be staged by the Central Plains Truck Pullers Club.

"They seem to go over well during the fair, so we decided to try it during Good Ole Summertime, too," Wiersma said. "We haven't had a street dance here since 2002, since the all-school reunion."

The street dance will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in Sibley's downtown area. Music will be by The Storm Dogs.

Wiersma is also excited about Cow Patty Bingo, a unique form of raffle that offers a chance at winning $500. Tickets are available at the Sibley Chamber of Commerce office, with proceeds going to fund Chamber activities. She's also instigated Bed Races and is seeking teams to participate; registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday with the "Parade of Beds" at about 10 a.m.

"We've never done that before," Wiersma said. "I was looking for some new things we could do and came across it on the Internet. We thought it would be a fun thing to try."
