Worthington wrestles its way over RRC/W-WG

WORTHINGTON -- Winning six of the first seven matches to build a 25-6 lead Tuesday night, the Worthington Trojans wrestling team went on to earn a 40-24 victory over Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove.

"From 103 pounds to heavyweight, this was a complete team effort," Worthington head coach Mark Prunty said following the dual. "We've made a lot of improvements over the past few weeks, and it really showed on the mat tonight."

Worthington's Joe Kinley got things started with an 8-0 victory at 103 pounds over RRC/W-WG's Taylor Vollmer, putting the Trojans up 4-0.

RRC/W-WG then won the next match to gain its first -- and only -- lead of the night (6-4), as Jordan Vollmer pinned Kyle Wiese in 1:26 at 112 pounds.

Worthington would then go on a 5-0 match run, scoring 21 consecutive points to take command of the dual.

The Trojans' Tyler Stugelmeyer started the rally with a pin of Brandon Bierl in 2:19 at 119 pounds, giving Worthington a 10-6 lead -- one it would not relinquish the rest of the night.

Worthington's Dayton Williamson then made it 13-6 with an 8-4 victory over Donnie Becerra at 125 pounds.

Bounon Tonsay increased the Trojans' lead to 19-6 with a pin in 1:38 over Jared Harnack in the 130-pound match.

Jessie Regalado of Worthington then produced a 9-2 win over Jesse Becerra at 135 pounds, putting the Trojans up by 16 (22-6).

The night's biggest match might have been the 140-pound event, as Worthington's Matt Steffl scored three points in the final five seconds of the third period to defeat Nathan Mattison by a score of 6-4, putting the Trojans up for good, 25-6.

"That was a huge victory and confidence-builder for both Matt and our team," Prunty said. "We scored a lot of points in the final seconds of periods tonight, and that really helped us keep the momentum on our side."

RRC/W-WG's Charlie Hubert got six points back for his team with a pin over Luis Garcia in 5:44 at 145 pounds, bringing the Falcons to within 13 (25-12).

Nathan Wajer then scored a 3-1 victory for Worthington at 152 pounds, defeating Gavin Mattison to generate a 28-12 Trojan lead.

However, RRC/W-WG would win the next three matches to pull within four points (28-24) with just two events remaining.

Nick Schroeder sparked the Falcons with a pin in 2:50 over Julio Casillas at 160 pounds, making it 28-18.

RRC/W-WG's Taylor Mattison then outscored Corey Steffl 3-1 to make it 28-21 after the 171-pound event.

The Falcons also earned a key victory at 189 pounds as Michael Koch defeated Jacob Steffl 5-2 to bring the score to 28-24.

But RRC/W-WG forfeited the last two matches (215 pounds and heavyweight) to give Bryant Schroeder and Jordan Schroeder respective victories, icing the victory for WHS.

Worthington (2-1) travels to Montevideo Thursday, and will face both the host team and T-M-B, starting at 5 p.m.
