Rebels, Wildcats capture titles

SLAYTON -- Sparked by five individual event winners Thursday, the Murray County Central Rebels captured the boys' track and field championship at the Red Rock Conference meet.

MCC won the meet with 168 points, while Southwest Christian took second with 146.5 points.

Hills-Beaver Creek/Ellsworth/Edgerton placed third with 93.7 points, Adrian finished fourth with 85 points, and Fulda took fifth with 70.8 points.

Westbrook-Walnut Grove/Red Rock Central (54.4), Southwestern United (42) and Mountain Lake/Butterfield-Odin (36.5) rounded out the field of eight teams.

Nate Ellens was a dual-event winner for the Rebels, as he won the 1600-meter run in 4:44.90 and the 3200-meter run in 10:37.60. Adrian's Ethan Wieneke was the runner-up in both races with his times of 4:45.20 and 10:47.50.

MCC's Patrick Peterson (12-3) and Alex Peterson (11-0) went 1-2 in the pole vault, while Tyler Wasberg won the 110-meter hurdles (16.99) and placed second in the high jump (5-8).

The Rebel duo of Anthony Gleis (41.62) and Matt VanMeveren (43.56) took the top two spots in the 300-meter hurdles.

MCC's 4x400-meter relay team also won, finishing with a time of 3:35.80.

SWC's Jordan Spronk (three gold medals) and Adrian's Blake Springman (two gold medals) were each a multiple-event winner.

Spronk and teammate Nicholas Pfeifle -- who won the 400-meter dash in 52.46 -- went 1-2 in the 200-meter dash with respective times of 23.32 and 23.67. Spronk also claimed top honors in the long jump with his bound of 19-11, and the 100-meter dash with his time of 11.71.

Springman had throws of 45-7½ and 136-4 to win the shot put and discus gold medals, while SWC's Tyler Mouw (42-6 and 128-6) finished second in both events.

H-BC/E/E's Terence Reid won the high jump (5-8), SWU's Nick Ober won the triple jump (40-9) and Fulda's Miguel Lavoie won the 800-meter run (2:07.70).

Winning relay races were Adrian (4x800, 8:46.94), H-BC/E/E (4x100, 46.36) and SWC (4x200, 1:35.62).


Fueled by four individual gold-medal performances, the Southwestern United Wildcats claimed the Red Rock Conference girls' track and field championship.

SWU totaled 144.3 points, while ML/B-O scored 109 points to finish as the meet runner-up.

MCC placed third with 88.5 points, SWC took fourth with 84 points, and Adrian finished fifth 82.6 points.

Fulda (75.5), H-BC/E/E (60) and W-WG/RRC (58) completed the field of eight teams.

SWU's Shannon Hussong (pole vault, 8-6), Betsy Voehl (long jump, 15-6¼), Bria Baumgard (triple jump, 32-5) and Amanda Baumgarn (100-meter dash, 13.83) each won an event.

Cassie Cselovszki earned a pair of third-place medals in the 1600-meter run (5:40.81) and the 3200-meter run (12:40.20), while Rachel Wilson was second in the 800-meter run (2:34.06) for the Wildcats.

ML/B-O's Kaysee Nesmoe and Kaitlin Feil, along with MCC's Laura Christensen, were each twin-event winners.

Nesmoe won the shot put with a whirl of 36-10¼ and won the discus with a throw of 114-10, while Feil won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.76 before later winning the 300-meter hurdles in 48.43.

ML/B-O's Jennie Romsdahl -- who was second in the 300-meter hurdles (49.49) -- won the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.21. Teammate Heidi Hildebrandt was right behind her, finishing second in 27.79.

Christensen ran times of 5:33.42 (1600) and 12:18.80 (3200) to win the two distance events.

Fulda's Mari Holinka won the high jump (4-8), and H-BC/E/E's Mya Mann won the 400-meter dash (1:02.67).

Adrian's Kourtney Kramer was the 800-meter run winner with a time of 2:32.10. Dragon Hailee Heitkamp was second in the 100-meter hurdles (18.25) and third in the 300-meter hurdles (51.10).

W-WG/RRC's Krystle Sell was second in the 100-meter dash (13.90) and third in three events: 200-meter dash (27.84), 400-meter dash (1:03.47) and pole vault (8-0).

Adrian won both the 4x400- (4:16.00) and 4x800-meter (10:02.58) relays, while ML/B-O (4x200, 1:52.40) and SWC (4x100, 53.16) also won relays.
