Fox Lake to face St. Francis at amateur state tournament

WELCOME -- In just their second year of existence, the Fox Lake Foxes will make an appearance in the Class C state amateur baseball tournament.

Fox Lake is the runner-up out of Region 13, and will play St. Francis, the champion of Region 1, Sunday night at 5 p.m. in Norwood.

Fox Lake advanced to the state tournament after defeating Wilmont in four games in the best-of-five, region playoff series. Luverne defeated Fox Lake in the Region 13C title game, 7-4.

A pair Windom Pirates -- brothers Kody and Kirby Johnson -- are two of the draftees for Fox Lake. The other is Fairmont's Scott Chirpich.

Kody Johnson has been the starting catching in his five games with the Foxes, while Chirpich started on the mound in Game 3 against Wilmont.

Kirby Johnson, who pitched two strong games for the Jackson Bulls in their series with Luverne, gives the Foxes another quality arm to choose from entering the state tournament.

Miah Fitzgerald and Kane Malo have been Fox Lake's top two pitchers and steady contributors at the plate, as well.

Joel Erdman, Grant Madison and Grant Carlson are among the other starters for the Foxes.

If Fox Lake beats St. Francis, it will play the winner of the Union Hill-Fergus Falls game next Saturday at 11 a.m. in Norwood. If the Foxes lose, their season is over.
