SW Christian defeats MCC in key Red Rock clash, 3-2

SLAYTON -- In a match that was originally scheduled for Thursday -- but was moved up three days because of the football schedule -- the Southwest Christian Eagles defeated the host Murray County Central Rebels, 3-2, in a clash between the leaders of the Red Rock Conference.

Both teams entered the match undefeated in league action. But now, the Eagles (8-0, 15-4) stand alone at the top, while the Rebels (7-1, 13-5) are tied with Southwest Star Concept for second. The Quasars host MCC Oct. 16.

After splitting a pair of closely-contested opening games, the Eagles won big in game three. The Rebels rallied for a six-point victory in game four, but SWC took an early lead in the decisive fifth game and claimed the match.

Game scores Monday were 21-25, 25-22, 25-9, 19-25, 15-11.

Kelsey Van Dyke (22 spike kills, five solo blocks) and Brianna Spronk (nine kills) led SWC at the net, getting strong setting from the duo of Emily Prins (18) and Kayla Broekhuis (16), who combined for 34 set assists.

Angie Vermeer served 19 points and had 15 digs for the Eagles, while Amber Van't Hof contributed 12 service points and Van Dyke came up with 15 digs.

MCC's Emily Bose had a strong all-around match. She hammered 15 spike kills, served for 13 points (including four aces), had five ace blocks and a trio of ace tips.

Dani Onken helped at the net with four kills, while Maddie Robinson and Alyssa Schmidt had 15 and 11 set assists, respectively. Robinson also served for seven points, including an ace.

SSC 3, Luverne 0

LUVERNE -- Once again utilizing a balanced attack, the Southwest Star Concept Quasars notched a volleyball victory -- their seventh in a row -- as they swept the host Luverne Cardinals. Game scores were 25-10, 25-16, 25-18.

Four sophomores came up big on the stat charts for SSC (15-7), as Luanna Henkels (15 set assists), Maddie Collin (seven spike kills), Erika Post (six kills) and Katherine Kazemba (12 digs) all made strong contributions.

Seniors Elizabeth Paul (10 digs) and Michelle Olsem (three ace blocks), along with junior leaper Jenna Leopold (seven kills) had a positive impact for the Quasars, who were led in serving by the perfect performances of Paul (15-of-15, 13 points, three aces) and Kazemba (13-of-13, 11 points, one ace).

Leading the Cardinals (4-15) were Kat Dahl (five kills), Mikki Fitzer (two blocks) Sundra Xaphakdy (six set assists, nine digs), Tara Snyder (two ace serves) and Karrie Xaisongkaham (11 digs).

Luverne, which hosts Jackson County Central Thursday, was led in serve receiving by Xaisongkaham (32-of-35) and Snyder (12-of-14).

SSC hosts Mountain Lake/Butterfield-Odin tonight.

PA 3, Minneota 0

MINNEOTA -- In a battle between last year's sectional champions, the visiting Pipestone Area Arrows earned a three-game sweep over the Minneota Vikings.

The Arrows (13-5) are the defending Section 3AA champs and are currently ranked fourth in the state in that class.

Minneota, the defending Section 3A champion, is the state's second-ranked team -- behind Windom -- in Class A. The Vikings won the state title in their class last November.

After winning games one and two by identical 25-20 scores, the Arrows rolled to a 25-13 victory in game three.

Meghan Visker (18) and Jeena Lentz (15) combined for 33 set assists for PA, feeding well to both Chelsey Evans and Nicole Buysse, who each had 10 spike kills in the match.

Evans also had a trio of solo blocks, while Buysse (10-of-10) served four aces. Lentz was 13-of-13 at the line with one ace.

Meghan Moffitt and Buysse had good defensive nights with 11 and 10 digs, respectively for the Arrows, who host Worthington Thursday.

RRC 3, RL-B 0

ROUND LAKE -- Alyssa Schmidt had 11 digs, seven kills and two ace blocks to help Red Rock Central to a sweep over Round Lake-Brewster, 25-22, 28-26, 25-17.

Abby Halter charted 10 kills, Kelly Shaner had 10 digs, and Alyssa Fredrickson posted two ace blocks for the Falcons (5-4, 11-11).

Krystle Sell recorded 20 set assists and seven service points, including two aces. Caitlyn DeCock (12 points, three aces) and Cierra Nickel (10 points, four aces) also served well for the Falcons, who host SSC Thursday.

Elly Schmitz topped the Raiders with eight kills and two ace blocks. Sarah Schmitz had four kills.

Krystle Doeden was 18-for-18 serving with 16 points. Kasey McNab (15 set assists) was 10-for-11 serving with 10 points and three aces. She also had a pair of ace blocks for RL-B (2-6, 9-11).

The Raiders are at Adrian Thursday.

MCW 3, JCC 2

TRIMONT -- Martin County West won a five-game thriller over the Jackson County Central Huskies, 25-20, 25-22, 23-25, 17-25, 15-12.

Megan Bezdicek led JCC with 20 kills, 17 digs, six blocks and two ace serves on a 13-for-14 night from the service line.

Brooke Burmeister charted 18 digs, 10 kills and eight blocks for the Huskies, while Sally Clarksean had 11 blocks.

Anna Meneely and Halee Elness led JCC with 27 and 16 set assists, respectively, while Briel Hendricksen had two ace serves, Hilary Geesman had 11 digs, and Ashley Lucht had five blocks.

JCC (14-4) is at Blue Earth tonight.
