Dragons shoot past Tigers

ADRIAN -- Down by seven with just over a minute to go in the first half, Adrian's Sam Lynn took over.

Lynn hit a trey and followed with a layup as the Dragons pulled within two points.

Lynn then hit a 3-pointer from the right wing before the halftime buzzer sounded, giving Adrian a 37-36 lead at half.

"You just have to do what you have to do to come back," Lynn said. "They were a good team, and we just needed to get past it."

The Dragons (2-1) opened up a big lead in the second half en route to a 77-56 victory over Harrisburg, S.D., Monday in a non-conference girls' basketball game.

"I don't think they recovered from the first half," Adrian head coach Randy Strand said. "It was almost like they were in shock."

Lynn scored a game-high 32 points, including 17 in the first half.

"It felt good," Lynn said. "I figured keep shooting until you make it, and I kept shooting. They started falling, so I just kept going. Everybody else played well, too, so that opened it up for me."

Lynn also had six rebounds, six assists and four steals on the night.

"What makes Sam so good is that she doesn't mind giving the ball up," Strand said. "She'll pass it when she can."

In the early going, Harrisburg (1-2) used its height advantage to take an early lead.

Lindsey Johnson (14 points) used her 6-1 height to score consecutive baskets midway through the first half as the Tigers had a 24-17 lead.

Harrisburg's Lindsey Goodale (six points) scored later in the half, pushing the lead to 10 -- forcing an Adrian timeout.

Out of the timeout, Johnson scored another basket, as it appeared Harrisburg was running away from the Dragons.

"All of a sudden, we kind of pushed ourselves and tried to force things and tried to make things happen that we're not capable of doing," Strand said.

However, the Dragons would not go down without a fight.

Between Katy Slater and Lynn, Adrian turned the deficit into a one-point lead at half.

Slater (14 points) scored four points in the final minutes, while Lynn scored 12 as Adrian had a 37-36 lead at half.

With both teams trading points back and forth in the beginning of the second half, the score was knotted at 48-all.

Lynn then made a steal and turned it into a layup on the other end, as the Dragons were off and running.

Ashley Thier scored her only two points of the game on a pass from Lynn -- giving Adrian a 52-48 advantage.

Harrisburg's Danielle Dement scored the Tigers' only points in the next five minutes, as Adrian went on a 15-2 run, capped off by a 3-pointer from Erica Thier (nine points, six assists).

A free throw from Allison Vos put another point on the board for the Tigers, but it was too little, too late as Adrian outscored Harrisburg 22-5 in a 10 minute span.

"We don't go very deep, and we just don't have our game legs yet," Harrisburg head coach Terry Fisher said. "We're getting there, but it's early in the season. We were a little fatigued, and we just didn't put the ball in the basket."

The Tigers scored eight points in the final 12:47 of the contest as Adrian won, 77-56.

"I thought we played pretty good, especially in the first half, but we kind of ran into some shooting lows the second half," Fisher said. "Adrian has a very good shooting team, and when they're hot, they are a tough team to beat."

Even facing a taller team, Adrian was able to out-rebound the Tigers, 37-39.

Melissa Weidert had 10 rebounds, while Bridgett Block had eight rebounds to go with her 10 points.

Adrian also had an advantage at the line, converting 12-of-16 shots, while Harrisburg was just 9-of-22.

The Dragons will be on the court again tonight, when they host Red Rock Conference foe Ellsworth.

"They have some big scorers, so we have to be ready," Strand said. "Sometimes, you have let downs after games like this, so hopefully, we'll show up ready to play."
