Orabs down Lady Generals, 59-42

SIBLEY, Iowa -- With just 13 points in the second half, the Sibley-Ocheyedan girls' basketball team lost to Sheldon, 59-42, in a non-conference basketball game Saturday.

"We got off to a pretty good start tonight," Sheldon head coach Kris Groff said. "We wanted to go inside early and see if we could get (Sara) Greenfield in foul trouble, and obviously, it worked. I thought we moved the ball extremely well, and we had good position down there."

Greenfield (four points) and Jessica Ackerman (eight points) were both in foul trouble most of the night, limiting the Generals (8-6) offensively.

"I thought the first half we played pretty well considering I had my two best post players in foul trouble," Sibley-Ocheyedan head coach Cody Harskamp said. "I thought our guards did a nice job of keeping us in the game by hitting some 3s and to be down by three, we felt pretty fortunate."

Sheldon's (7-7) Amanda Meester (game-high 15 points, nine rebounds) scored the game's first four points on an offensive rebound and basket and a pair of free throws.

The Orabs' Brittany Boerhave (12 points, nine rebounds) scored Sheldon's next five points on a basket and a 3-point play as the visiting Orabs had a 9-2 lead.

A trey from Katie Pruiksma (seven points, four assists) pushed the Sheldon lead to 16-6 late in the first quarter, but a basket from Rachel Lamfers (six points) cut the lead to 16-8 after the first quarter.

Following a free throw from Meester, Greenfield scored on an offensive put back, cutting the lead to just seven.

However, a basket and a pair of free throws from Sheldon pushed the lead to 21-10 early in the second quarter.

It was then that the Lady Generals made their move.

Hattie Hartzell (six points) hit a trey, followed by a basket from Danelle Miedema (nine points), as the lead was cut to six.

After a Meester basket, Miedema and Hartzell each hit a trey from opposite wings as the Sheldon lead shrunk to just two points, 23-21.

"In the second quarter, defensively, we broke down," Groff said. "I didn't think we played very good second-quarter defense. We didn't recognize their 3-point shooters, and they got three or four of them off."

The teams would trade baskets in the final four minutes of the first half, as the Orabs had a 32-29 lead at the break.

Boerhave started the scoring in the third quarter with a 3-point play, and Meester followed with a basket as Sheldon increased its lead to eight, 37-29.

A basket and free throw from Ackerman cut the lead to five, but S-O scored just two more points in the third quarter, as Sheldon had a 41-34 lead after three quarters of play.

"In the second half, it was the same deal. The girls got in foul trouble again but held in there in the third quarter," Harskamp said.

After scoring just five points in the third quarter, the Lady Generals struggled offensively in the fourth quarter as well.

The Orabs once again scored the first five points of the quarter, pushing the lead to 46-34.

Ackerman answered with a 3-point play and later scored on an offensive rebound and put back. However, those were the only two field goals in the fourth quarter for the Lady Generals.

The Orabs continued to increase the lead, as a trey from Alexis Bart pushed the lead to 49-37, and a 10-2 run midway through the fourth quarter propelled Sheldon to a 59-42 victory.

"The girls responded well in the third quarter," Groff said. "They did what they needed to do to get the lead back up, and we maintained it down the stretch."

S-O will be on the court again Tuesday at West Lyon, while Sheldon will host Spirit Lake the same evening.
