Run, walk or ride to the Regatta
WORTHINGTON -- There are plenty of options for people who want to feel like they are participating in Worthington's Windsurfing Regatta and Unvarnished Music Festival.
For the fifth consecutive year, the Surf's Up five-mile run and the YPALS 5K Regatta Walk will again take place. For the second year in a row, the Regatta Bike Ride will take place.
"Word is getting out more, and people are realizing it is Regatta weekend, and this is a fun thing to do," said YPALS coordinator Greg Wede. "It has actually been a growing activity year by year."
According to Wede, the 5K Walk is becoming one of the largest local fundraisers for the YPALS program. Each year, about 100 to 150 walkers participate.
The five-mile run begins at 8 a.m., with registration at 7 a.m. Registration for the YPALS 5K Walk is at 8 a.m., with the start at 9 a.m. Both events begin at Chautauqua Park. Open class medals will be awarded to the top three runners in each class of the Surf's Up run.
"People from anywhere can participate in the run or walk," Wede said. "And people can register on the day of the event."
Last year, more than 40 bicyclists took part in the first Regatta Bike Ride. Although pleased with the turnout for a first-time event, organizers would like to improve on those numbers the second time around.
"We're hoping to build on that," said Kenton Meier, Worthington.
The bike ride is sponsored by the Sports and Rec Committee of the Worthington Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, of which Meier is a member. Bicyclists can preregister at the Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce, or registration will be from 8 to 9 a.m. Saturday at Centennial Park. The ride will begin at 9 a.m., with 15, 30- and 50-mile routes planned.
In 2007, the majority of riders took the middle road -- the 30-mile route -- with the fewest number of bicyclists opting for the 50-mile trek. Meier emphasized the ride is strictly recreational but does take some endurance, especially for the longer routes.
"I don't know if people think it's a bike race, but it's a bike ride," he stressed. "It's a just-for-fun thing."
