Brrr! Area endures cold

WORTHINGTON -- Cold enough for you?

That was the question of the day across the region Thursday, as temperatures plunged across southwest Minnesota and northwest Iowa. Above-zero readings were a (frozen?) pipe dream, as highs never made it above zero.

Worthington's temperature as of 4 p.m. Thursday was minus-9 -- fortunately, the winds were only between 5 and 10 mph. The low for the day was minus-26, which was where thermometers sat from roughly 4:30 to 8 a.m., according to

Though the minus-26 reading was certainly bone-chilling, it wasn't a record for the date. Worthington had a record low of minus-29 on Jan. 15, 1972.

Other recorded lows throughout the region were: Adrian, Jackson, Luverne and Rock Rapids, Iowa, each minus-22; Pipestone and Slayton, each minus-24; and Windom and Sheldon, Iowa, minus-26.

Today's forecast calls for scattered flurries, with area highs between 15 and 20. Dangerous wind chills will approach minus-25 -- a temperature at least area residents have grown accustomed to lately.
