Dist. 518 Board of Education approves calendars
WORTHINGTON -- The District 518 Board of Education approved calendars for the next three academic years at its Tuesday meeting, one of the last steps in the process to set a pre-Labor Day start date through use of the Minnesota Department of Education's Flexible Learning Year option.
"The second and the third year calendars are very consistent and they reflect common days as part of the consortium," said Superintendent John Landgaard, referring to the group of southwest Minnesota districts that synchronized their calendars to take advantage of shared staff development and other resources.
The board unanimously approved an Aug. 23 start date and May 24 end date for the 2010-2011 school year; an Aug. 22 start date and May 22 end date for 2011-2012; and an Aug. 20 start date and May 21 end date for 2012-2013. Members also revised this year's calendar to reflect a June 3 end date for students.
The board also approved an increase of 7.32 full-time equivalent in staffing, including a 5.12 fte increase at Worthington Middle School.
"It's based on increased enrollment in elementary school and the move to the middle school of students," Landgaard explained. "We've been a little short, for example, in music, short in (English Language Learning) staffing ... and with large special education numbers coming into the middle school, we have to address that end."
In other business, the board on Tuesday:
- Approved a quote of $62,575 from Hufcor Minnesota, L.L.C. for a new folding gymnasium door at the middle school. Authorized administration to move forward with the track resurfacing project, provided the project costs less than $100,000.
- Awarded the bid for asbestos abatement at Worthington High School to Assessco Environmental Services for $17,198.
- Appointed Brad Shaffer as school board representative to the city of Worthington Ad hoc Committee for economic development.
- Approved the contract for a shared agriculture teacher with Round Lake-Brewster School District.
- Learned the public administrator evaluation posted on the district's website will remain available until Friday.
- Approved resignation of Beth Mahoney as English Language-Learners paraprofessional at the middle school and of Carrie Vossen as paraprofessional at Prairie Elementary.
- Approved the retirement of Beverly Schroeder as paraprofessional at Prairie Elementary and of Beverly Watje as Payroll Manager with the district.
- Approved the employment of Anisabel Palma Zamora Medina as long-term substitute Spanish teacher at Prairie Elementary, Anthony Tomscha as program aide with Community Education, Meagan Hagerman as program aide with Community Education, Carissa Gabrielson as seventh- and eighth-grade golf coach with the middle school, Kari Pierson as long-term substitute eighth-grade English teacher at the middle school, Fred Heille as long-term substitute eighth-grade math teacher at the middle school, Kendall Spartz as program aide with Community Education, Brittany Larson as 21st CCLC teacher with Community Education, Glenis Marsh as 21st CCLC teacher with Community Education, Patrick Mahoney as English language-learners paraprofessional at the middle school, Melissa Knutson as long-term substitute third grade teacher at Prairie Elementary, Emily Christensen as kindergarten paraprofessional at Prairie Elementary and Marcella Wetzel as long-term substitute paraprofessional at Prairie Elementary
- Voted not to renew the probationary teaching contracts for Susan Getting as English as Second Language teacher at Prairie Elementary School and Jenna Pulkrabek as social worker with special programs.
