Brewster Community Club ready for street dance, Fun Days

BREWSTER -- The temperature may be forecast for 80 degrees this weekend, but that isn't stopping members of the Brewster Community Club (BCC) from thinking ahead to Christmas.

"We're hoping to take proceeds and buy new Christmas decorations for main street," said BCC Treasurer Dave Hartzler. "It has been our goal for the last couple of years."

Those proceeds, BCC members hope will come from Saturday night's street dance -- part of Brewster Fun Days.

"We usually have quite a few people" for Fun Days," Hartzler stated. "It is kind of a family thing. But the big thing is the street dance. It is a good fundraiser for us."

The dance, he said, went very well last year, so they decided to invite the same band back. The "Judd Hoos" will play from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Saturday night, with admission and entry at the Brewster Park Shelter.

The fun begins Friday evening with a Round Lake-Brewster (RLB) sophomore class sponsored food booth featuring pizza and pop opening at 5 p.m. at the park shelter and a kiddie pedal pull sign up for kids ages 4 to 11. The location of the pedal pull, which begins at 5:30 p.m., has changed to Fourth Avenue in front of the school. The drawing for Little Mr./Miss Brewster will be at 6:45 p.m. in the Brewster Park Band shell and includes children ages 4 to 10.

Saturday's activities begin with a tractor show at 10 a.m. in the Brewster Legion parking lot. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., there will be kids' games in the park, sponsored by the RLB senior class. The class will also have RLB cookbooks for sale. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., there will be kid train rides in the park.

Both a horse shoe and sand volleyball tournament will begin at 11 a.m., and the food booth, featuring hamburgers and hot dogs and sponsored by the RLB junior class, opens at 11:30. Pie and ice cream are provided by the Sacred Heart women.

A parade begins at 1 p.m., and at 2 p.m. "George of the Juggle" will perform either in the park or in the air conditioned Brewster school gym.

The kids' water fights and games, a popular attraction put on each year by the Brewster Fire Department, begins at 3 p.m.

"The firefighters have water fights with the kids, which is a lot of fun for everybody," Hartzler said. "Especially if it is hot out."

On Sunday, the medallion hunt begins at sunrise, and the annual Brewster Fire Department pancake break fast runs from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Legion.
