Grovom eager to lead as assistant principal at Prairie Elementary

Jason Grovom

WORTHINGTON -- Jason Grovom can't say the past few months have been boring.

While Grovom prepares for his new role as assistant principal of Prairie Elementary, wife Katy is starting a new job as a kindergarten teacher in Blue Earth. And the couple just welcomed a new addition: baby Brett, born July 26 -- one year to the day after brother Blake.

When he's not spending time with his growing family, Grovom is training for his position with former assistant principal Josh Noble, who will replace outgoing principal Paul Besel in the upcoming school year.

"I always knew I wanted to be in an administrative role," Grovom explained. "I just knew I needed experience first, and after 10 years (teaching) I felt comfortable that it was the right time."

Grovom completed his undergraduate studies at Carroll College in his hometown of Helena, Mont., before taking his first job as a first- and second-grade teacher in Boulder, Mont.

He earned his master's degree from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, and spent the next eight years teaching at Jordan Elementary School. He also helped with afterschool programs, coached football and baseball and served as a union negotiator.

It was there he completed his internship in administration while working toward his K-12 administrative licensure at St. Mary's University.

Grovom said he looks forward to working with the school's staff and diverse student population.

"The reason that I'm in this profession is I enjoy watching kids learn and seeing them grow and that hasn't changed from when I was a teacher," he said. "Maybe I can impact more in this role."
