First-ever 'ChalkStock' is Saturday in Spirit Lake

Submitted Photo Avis Davis, a member artist at A Piece of Work Inc.,  created this image on May 29 in front of the gallery.  It was done as a "chalk-check" to test how well the chalk and pastels would work for the ChalkStock event.

SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa -- Sharpen your chalk and sweep off your sidewalk square, it's time for northwest Iowa's first-ever ChalkStock event.

The sidewalk chalk festival is slated for Saturday at A Piece of Work Inc. in Spirit Lake.

"It coincides with the weekend of Woodstock," explained Gallery Director Haley Isder. "Originally the idea was to have a lot of music and just have it be an awesome street festival. ... It's focused mostly on the sidewalk chalk and the art."

Singer-guitarist Jared Banes of Tama, Iowa, will entertain attendees with original songs throughout the day.

Both ChalkStock drawing competitions kick off at 7 a.m. The Sidewalk Drawing Competition will be on the 4-by-4-foot sidewalk squares closest to the red tile brick, while street parking spaces will be blocked off to accommodate the 8-by-10-foot Street Art Drawing Competition. Attendees will be able to view the artists' works in progress.

At 5:30 p.m., the Peoples Choice and Artists' Choice awards will be presented to the sidewalk/street artists.

Youngsters can get in on the fun, too, with two supervised mural projects for ages 11 and younger. Young artists may participate from 9 to 11 a.m. and from 1 to 3 p.m. in the gallery parking lot; there will also be a "designated doodling area."

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and from 3 to 4:30 p.m., there will be a series of artist "Chalk-off" competitions. Competitors will draw a subject.

"It's a friendly competition -- there's no real prize," Isder said. "It's going to be two artists facing off, and we're going to have 2-foot-by-2-foot squares marked off on the cement right next to each other. It's kind of designed to get the artists to interact a little bit more."

Both artists will depict a subject chosen at random, and the winner will be selected by audience applause.

Isder said the gallery will be accepting applications today and Saturday; the registration fee includes a set of chalk pastels and a reserved place on the pavement -- ChalkStock T-Shirts are no longer guaranteed.

"It's best if people register as soon as possible," she urged. "We only ordered so much chalk."

The gallery is located at 1619 Hill Ave. in Spirit Lake. For more information, contact A Piece of Work Inc. at (712) 336-1077; e-mail; or visit
