United Way telethon to air Tuesday

WORTHINGTON -- Making plans to head to the Great Plains Zoo this summer? Want to throw a backyard barbecue for 50 of your closest friends? Tuesday is the ideal time to get a good deal and give to good cause at the same time during the Nobles County United Way (NCUW) live telethon and silent auction.

Worthington Public Safety Director Mike Cumiskey is at the helm of the NCUW for the 2010-2011 season and said the goal for fundraising this year is set at $140,000, with a $6,000 goal for the telethon.

"I'm challenging others to match my donation of $500," he said.

Approximately 99 percent of the money raised in Nobles County stays in Nobles County, he said, which benefits a lot of children.

"Come out and start working on your Christmas shopping," Cumiskey invited. "We have lots of vendors and plenty of entertainment."

The items for sale include jewelry, cookware, storage containers, candles, cookbooks and more. The silent auction items range from oil changes to comedy tickets, from a signed Twins baseball to a Bluetooth headset, from pork loins to gift baskets and gift cards to dinner for four with the mayor of Worthington.

The telethon will be aired live on Cable 3, 730 AM, US104 and at

The telethon runs from 5 to 8:30 p.m. in the Worthington High School gymnasium, or pledge calls can be made to 507-390-0123 or 507-390-0125. Silent auction bids can be made at 507-390-0127. The entire silent auction can be viewed at the Daily Globe website at

"Every donation is important," Cumiskey stated. "Organizations that provide direct support such as food, blankets and crisis management are in need during these (tough) economic times."
