Christmas comes early this year in Adrian

ADRIAN -- With all of the excitement in Adrian this weekend, one may mistake Saturday for a holiday.

The local celebration, Christmas In July, highlights all of the traditions that Christmas consists of -- if it were in July.

From disc golf to car shows, exotic animals and a parade, there are no presents, but the joy of the holiday is certainly there.

"I just really hope the weather turns out all right," Rita Boltjes, president of Adrian Town and Country Association, said about her pre-Christmas list.

If her weather wish doesn't pan out, Boltjes will at least get a new event.

"What can I say? I'm partial to car shows." Boltjes said.

The event was on the schedule last year but was taken off due to lack of volunteers.

"We're really excited to have 20-30 cars signed up this year," Boltjes said, "It's a new event so we hope it goes well."

An event that always turns out well, the parade, will be saluting veterans this year.

"We're very grateful and very proud for all that they've done for us -- the least we could do is honor them in the parade," Boltjes said, "It's not simply limited to veterans either, we want to recognize everyone who has served our country in any way."

The Grand Marshals lead off the parade at 7 p.m.

"We decided to switch around the parade and the kiddie tractor pull to keep it more organized, and this way I think it will flow better." Boltjes said.

Christmas In July didn't get its name from coincidence, but because Santa will be there.

"Yes, we do have Santa blowing balloon animals for all of the kids," Boltjes said, "He'll be at the Bounce Around Inflatables that also includes mini-golf."

Between Santa and a parade alone, it's safe to say Christmas is coming early this year.
