Community Day opens at Windom Middle School

WINDOM -- Community members will get a chance to compete against middle school students in the Knowledge Bowl as the annual Community Day begins today at the Windom Middle School.

The Knowledge Bowl is one of several activities lined up for the public in conjunction with this year's event, themed "Community/School Make Us Proud."

Every year, the Windom Middle School advisory board organizes an exclusive day for members of the public to visit with students and learn about activities in which they are involved.

"Our No. 1 goal is to get the community to come and see all the great things we're doing in the school and how proud of the students we are," said Community Day coordinator and fourth grade teacher Gina Freiwald.

Freiwald planned this year's Community Day with fellow teacher Jennifer Squires.

Superintendent Wayne Wormstadt will welcome the guests at 1:45 p.m. Attendees will then be treated to refreshments and a performance by the school band and choir.

A new twist to Community Day is the Knowledge Bowl, during which community members will be pitted against students and quizzed on 10 trivia questions.

After the Knowledge Bowl, cast members of the middle school play, "Make 'Em Laugh," will provide entertainment for the attendees.

Freiwald added the day will conclude with classroom visits.

Middle school principal Lance Northey is looking forward to experiencing his first Community Day.

"This is my first year as principal," he said. "To me, there are two parts to this. The first part is bringing the school, community and businesses together to share our success and showcase what students are doing," he continued. "A second part is about serving -- learning where kids are giving back to the community."

Windom Area Middle School Community Day is scheduled from 1:45 to 3 p.m. today in the middle school commons.
