UP line reopens after derailment

BREWSTER -- Union Pacific Railroad crews completed replacement of 1,000 feet of track Tuesday night and reopened the line to rail travel by 11:30 p.m. -- about 27 hours after a train derailment northeast of Brewster.

Mark Davis, a spokesperson for Union Pacific, said the cause of the derailment remains under investigation.

The train crew reported that the train was moving along fine when the emergency brakes suddenly applied, indicating that air hoses between the rail cars had uncoupled.

In all, 23 rail cars split from the track in the Monday night incident.
