WORTHINGTON -- Following a successful "Meet the Trojans" parent preview night June 14, the 120-member "Spirit of Worthington" Trojan marching band opened its 2012 competitive marching season last weekend.

The Worthington High School (WHS) band marched all the way to a first-place finish in the Class 2AA category at the June 15 "Battle of the Bands" parade in Lake Crystal, besting bands from Maple Grove and Waconia, among other competitors. The parade's judges, from the Decorah, Iowa, Tri-State Judging Association, commented favorably on the creativity, design and execution of the new WHS parade show, titled "Over the Rooftops" which features music from the musical "Mary Poppins."

Under the direction of Jon Loy, the WHS band swept all Class 2AA categories, including Music & Marching Execution, Music General Effect, Visual General Effect and Color guard.

On June 16, the WHS band marched at the Fulda Wood Duck Festival parade, scoring an 85 to capture first place in the Open Class Division.

The Trojans will begin their fall marching season in September with local appearances at the WHS Homecoming football game and the 2012 King Turkey Day parade.

The WHS band members are defending Parade Grand Champions of the Tri-State Band Festival in Luverne, the "Festival of Bands" in Sioux Falls, S.D., the "River City Band Festival" in Chamberlain, S.D., and the Anoka Halloween Parade.
