Slayton's 125th anniversary to be observed during Days of '87

SLAYTON -- The Days of 87 celebration was reincarnated several years ago, specifically so the committee would have a few years to get the event established before the 125th anniversary of the founding of Slayton, according to Mayor Miron Carney.

"We figured it would be easier to have a big celebration if we figured it out before the big day," he explained.

Founded in 1887, Slayton will celebrate 125 years the weekend of July 6, 7 and 8 with an all-school reunion, parade, street dance and a variety of activities around town.

New this year will be kids' inflatables, a pedal pull and the street dance. Most of the activities will take place in one of three places, Carney said. Near the intersection of 27th Street and Broadway Avenue, the pedal pull, inflatables and a Pinewood Derby will be located.

Volleyball, softball and bean bag tournaments will be at Bicentennial Field, and at the fairgrounds will be the street dance, beer garden, many class reunion events and the conclusion of the memorial ride.

Carney said his favorite part of the annual celebration is the way people piggy-back their own celebrations, having gatherings in their yards, attending activities together and adding to a city-wide celebration environment. There are many activities to go with the class reunion, and some classes are also having separate events of their own.
