Dutch Festival comes to Edgerton

EDGERTON -- Do you like bull riding, car shows, concerts and parades? Or even just one of those?

Well there might not be tall, blonde, blue-eyed people with wooden shoes everywhere, but the Dutch Festival will be making its way to Edgerton for the 63rd year this weekend.

"We have a couple big events at night, and we have some smaller events during the day for the kids and some for the adults," said Jeff DeBoer, a festival organizer.

Most of this weekend's Dutch Festival activities have been part of Edgerton's annual celebration for years, but there are some new additions to spice things up.

"The newest thing would probably be The Amazing Race," DeBoer said. "It is a team competition just like the show on TV."

The show "The Amazing Race" is a competition on CBS in which contestants race each other in teams of two for money. The teams stop at checkpoints to do tasks of various kinds, normally consisting of puzzle-type challenges.

Most of the familiar attractions have continued to draw people from surrounding towns, DeBoer said. One such crowd-pleaser is bullriding, which will cap a full day of events on Friday and begin at 8:30 p.m. at City Park.

"This is the 10th year of bull riding," DeBoer said. "Great Frontier Bull Riding brings in all the bull riders who compete for points in a league, so no local entries are allowed."

Another main attraction at the Dutch Festival will be the parades at 7 p.m., both Friday and Saturday.

"We have two parades," DeBoer said. "We have about seven homemade floats.

"We have five bands coming Friday night," he continued. "We have three drum lines -- we have the Groove coming out of Sioux Falls, the Bleep coming out of Montevideo and then we have our local Southwest drum line. The parade is pretty good, and not too commercialized."

An additional major attraction of the weekend will be a Saturday night concert featuring FFH, a Christian music from of Lancaster, Pa.

"The concert on Saturday night will be a big draw," DeBoer said. "We try to bring in family-oriented entertainment, and FFH is a Christian music group with a pop-worship style that has -- and will -- appeal to a wide audience."
