Benson, Nobles County receive state awards

WORTHINGTON -- Nobles County Commissioner David Benson was honored with the President's Award earlier this week at the Minnesota Association of Counties annual meeting in St. Cloud.

Benson is the second recipient to be presented with the President's Award, which is given in recognition of a county commissioner's outstanding and distinguished service in their counties and their region.

Randy Maluchnik, AMC president, presented Benson with the award. He acknowledged the current Nobles County board chair for his 20 years of service as a commissioner, five years of which were served as board chair.

"Volunteerism is (Benson's) middle name, with service on a wide range of efforts ranging from traveling to New Orleans to reconstruct two homes after the hurricane to involvement on many local, regional, state boards and committees," Maluchnik said.

Benson's work extends far beyond his involvement as a county commissioner, said Maluchnik during the presentation. He's active on the Community Wind South board, is a Windustry member and serves on the Prairie Ecology Bus, Nobles County Art Center and Nobles County Historical Society boards. He is also involved in the Southwest Minnesota Adult Mental Health Consortium, AARP Statewide Volunteer Leadership Team, Association of Minnesota Counties policy committees; University of Minnesota AMC Extension committee; Regional Sustainable Development Partnerships Statewide Chair; Rock-Nobles Community Corrections executive board; Rural Minnesota Energy Board past chair; Southern Prairie Community Care; State Community Health Services Advisory; Southwest Minnesota Housing Partnership; Southwest Regional Development Commission Chair; and Southwest Solid Waste Commission past chair.

In addition to Benson's honor, Nobles County accepted the "County of the Year" award from the Minnesota Counties Intergovernmental Trust, an affiliate of the AMC. The award is presented to a county that "exemplifies the best record during the year" in managing risk and loss control.

The Association of Minnesota Counties is comprised of all 87 counties in the state.
