Adrian prepares for Christmas in July

ADRIAN — Christmas comes but once a year — expect in Adrian, where it comes once in December and again in July.

On Friday and Saturday, the community will host the seventh annual Christmas in July that offers a little bit for everyone.

The event always takes place the third weekend of July and is sponsored by the Adrian Town and Country Association with help from other local organizations.

Ribs and Rims, in conjunction with the Cruise in Car Show, will start at 5:30 p.m. Friday behind City Hall. The meal is sponsored by the Women of Today.

“They are serving ribs, and there is a Cruise in Car Show so anything with a rim can be entered,” said Rita Boltjes, Adrian deputy clerk/treasurer and Town and Country Association member. “It isn’t a competition, just a show. Anything with a rim can participate — tractors, motorcycles, even golf carts.”

Starfire will also perform until 11 p.m. Friday.

Saturday’s events will start at 8 a.m. with the run/walk and the volleyball tournament, both at Lower Park. The Meeting at Hole One for the Annual Disc Golf Tournament will also be at 8 a.m., and tee off for the disc golf tournament will be at 10 a.m. There will be three divisions for the tournament — novices, advanced and youth.

A kickball tournament will begin at 10 a.m. at the softball and baseball fields.

“The kickball tournament is new this year,” Boltjes said. “It’s more popular right now than a ball tournament — more people are able to do kickball than softball or baseball.”

Boltjes said Tuesday that there were six teams registered to participate in the volleyball tournament and six kickball teams signed up.

At 10:30 a.m. Saturday the Sanford Zoo Express Demonstration, sponsored by Sanford Clinic, will begin at the Adrian Elementary School in the commons area.

From 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. there will be a food booth at the fire hall serving pork burgers, hot dogs, chips, baked beans, desserts and soft serve ice cream.

A jewelry party will be from noon to 7 p.m. at the Archery Center Park, and the Craft and Vendor Show will be from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Adrian Elementary gym.

The Kids’ Christmas movie will be shown at 1:30 p.m. at the Adrian Elementary School in the common area. It will be followed by storytime with Santa Claus.

The Kiddie Tractor Pull will start at 5 p.m. at the Adrian State Bank parking lot.

The parade will start at 7 p.m. Saturday, and the Duck Race Raffle will be at the fire hall after the parade.

Following the duck race, the Drag Queen contest will take place in the Maine Street parking lot.

Boltjes said the Adrian events promise to be entertaining for the family hopes people will join in the festivities.

“It’s a fun filled family day, and it’s all at a reasonable cost,” she said.
