Pipestone County Fair to begin Wednesday

PIPESTONE — The 2013 Pipestone County Fair, scheduled for Wednesday through Saturday, will bring back many favorite events, said Minnesota Extension Office Manager Carol Scotting.

“There is nothing really, really new,” she said. “It’s just pretty much our regular schedule, which is always exciting when it arrives.”

There will be a variety of events at the fair, including numerous 4-H and FFA competitions.

“One thing that makes the Pipestone County Fair unique is that, overall, we completely fill all our livestock barns, and we have to send some animals home because we don’t have enough stalling for them,” Scotting said.

The Pipestone County 4-H program has steadily grown in recent years, especially in livestock projects.

“In the horse area we don’t have enough stalls, and a certain number will have to go home,” Scotting added. “This year we’re fitting all the swine into the swine barn, but it’s pretty much full from seam to seam, and our beef, dairy and goats are full, too. We have the notoriety of having a strong livestock program here in Pipestone.”

The 4-H Food Stand will also be under new management this year and offer new food choices to fairgoers. There will be a featured meal each night, including Dar’s Pizza on Wednesday; pork patties on Friday; and a chicken meal deal on Saturday.

“Its all kind of trial and error to see what people will like and not like,” Scotting said. “I think it’s going to be interesting and a kind of fun change.”

Judging took place on July 27 for general 4-H projects, and Scotting said the 4-H building is “pretty much set up and ready to go.”

While some of the judging and weigh-ins were completed earlier in the week, the full schedule of events is slated to begin Wednesday.
