Regatta T sports new logo

WORTHINGTON — By the time the Worthington Windsurfing Regatta and Unvarnished Music Festival kicks off five weeks from today, its organizers hope the festival’s new logo will be prominently displayed throughout the community.

T-shirts bearing the design are already available for purchase, according to Worthington Okabena Windsurfers President Ken Moser.

“It’s the 15th anniversary of the event, so we decided we should have something that’s a sustainable logo,” explained Moser. “Our thought was to introduce a logo that encompasses what the event is.”

The festival board put the call out to known graphic designers in the community and ultimately decided upon artwork created by Brad Behrends of Behrends Signworks. Behrends previously designed the logo for Worthington’s King Turkey Day celebration and has experience in other festival-related artwork.

For Behrends, the challenge was coming up with something simple enough to be used as a logo while encompassing the spirit of the event.

“I had a couple of different ones,” Behrends said. “One was more of a design of a windsurfer with words shaped inside of a windsurfer. There were a few different rough drafts I (showed) them.”

The chosen logo features waves to signify the Regatta and a guitar for the music festival.

“The design of it caught me right away,” noted Moser.

While he logo is being prominently featured this year on the festival T-shirt, it will also be used for years to come as the festival’s official insignia.

Moser hopes the eye-catching T-shirt design will make it a sought-after item at this year’s event.

“The T-shirt has kind of become a collectible,” he said. “There are people who want to collect all the T-shirts. We are unaware of many other regattas having a T-shirt. What it does for us is it markets our event throughout the world. I’ve been in the metropolitan area wearing one of the shirts and had people come up to me and say something about it.”

Besides being a promotional tool, the T-shirt gives people an opportunity to contribute to the festival — which is a free event, noted Moser.

“It’s one of our two major fundraisers,” he said. “We strive every year to keep this a no-cost venue so people can just come out and enjoy the music and the windsurfing.”

This year, the T-shirt will be available in both short-sleeved and long-sleeved versions.

The shirts can already be purchased at the Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce Office, 1121 Third Ave., and by Monday will also be available at The Stag Clothiers, 412 10th St. During festival, the T-shirts will be sold at the Daily Globe tent on Sailboard Beach.

The 15th annual Windsurfing Regatta and Unvarnished Music Festival,which this year once again includes the US Windsurfing National Championships, will be June 11-15. For more information, go to; or contact the Chamber office, 372-2919.
