WORTHINGTON -- Their last name may be the same, but there's no relation between the former Tan U owner, Todd Schroeder, and the new owners, Brenda and Kayla Schroeder.

The mother-daughter duo took ownership of the business at 1610 North McMillan, Worthington, on Dec. 1 Since then, they have worked to clear out the selection of body lotions and tanning creams in preparation for the 2013 collection of products featuring new brands and new scents.

"We're slowly easing in," said Brenda, adding that they are getting a lot of input from customers.

"They're No. 1, so we'd like to know any ideas for improvement," she said. "We'd like them to have a good experience while they're here."

Kayla manages the business, and said they have added headbands and key fobs and plan to bring in more products in the future. She worked for Todd Schroeder for three months at Tan U before she and her mom decided to purchase the business.

"Todd had talked about selling and me and my mom both had the same idea to (own it)," Kayla said.

This time of year, they have quite a few clients looking to get a little tan before going on vacation. And, with prom season just a few months away, Kayla said they are busy. The business has almost as many male clients as female, and customers can utilize the tanning services of Tan U if they at least 16 years of age (those younger than 16 need parental consent).

"We see numerous age groups," Brenda said, adding that their tanning service is a "relaxing experience."

The UV rays emitted through tanning beds are good for people with skin issues such as psoriasis, Brenda said, adding that several of their customers take advantage of tanning to help improve skin.

Tan U has three 15-minute tanning beds and two 12-minute beds, including one stand-up model. Appointments are encouraged by calling the business at 372-7050, although walk-ins are welcome.

Customers can choose from a one-time visit to tanning packages that range from 50 to 400 minutes. Each month they will try to have a special rate on a different package, Kayla said.

Tan U is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Possible hours on Sunday may be added in the future, depending on demand.
