WORTHINGTON — New Hy-Vee Store Director Zach Shank plans to continue the long-standing success and customer service the store has brought to Worthington.

“I think what I do is all about working for the customers,” Shank said. “It’s about being a leader and making customers happy.”

Shank, originally from Dubuque, Iowa, has been with the company full-time for 11 years.

“I started at the Dubuque Hy-Vee location as the manager of store operations, and when I got the opportunity to move to Worthington to be the store director I couldn’t say no,” Shank said.

Shank attended Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, where he attained his associate’s degree in business, and later received his bachelor’s degree in business management from the University of Phoenix.

“I think I’ve just always been interested in business, and I’m happy about where it has led me,” Shank said.

His wife Beth, who is a freelance consultant for McGraw Hill Publishing in Dubuque, and his three daughters — ages 7, 5 and 2 — are currently still living in Dubuque until they can land a permanent home in Worthington.

“I’m renting a house right now in Worthington, but when our house finally sells in Iowa then we will absolutely start our house hunting,” said Shank.

Even though Shank has only been here since late December, he believes he can already tell the Worthington Hy-Vee location sets the bar high.

“I was thrilled to come here,” he said. “I could tell right when I got here that everyone has worked really hard at keeping it up and keeping the store looking brand new. Everyone has just been amazing and welcoming so far.”

When asked about the other competing stores in Worthington, Shank explained why he feels Hy-Vee towers above the rest.

“It’s all about customer service,” Shank explained. “I believe our customer service is top notch. We offer a variety of items at our store, we’re clean and we’re friendly. I believe all of those things are important in running a successful store.”
