Murder charge filed in Jackson County

JACKSON -- A murder charge was filed Friday against a Jackson man accused of stabbing his brother Thursday.

The Jackson County Attorney's Office charged Tyron Louis Collins, 38, with second-degree murder with intent.

He is now being held at the Jackson County Jail on a $1 million bail with conditions, or $2 million without conditions.

A news release from the Jackson County Sheriff's Office states Collins was placed under arrest for second-degree murder after his brother, Kenneth Collins Jr., 37, died at the Jackson County Medical Center. According to information from the release and from Jackson County Sheriff Roger Hawkinson, a 911 call came from the Colonial Manor Nursing Home shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday.

The staff reported a stabbing had occurred and the suspect had fled on foot.

Kenneth was an employee at Colonial Manor and when Tyron entered the nursing home the brothers allegedly got into an altercation.

"A knife was involved," Hawkinson stated.

Shortly after authorities in Jackson County sent out a request for assistance, Tyron was located by the Worthington Police Department near the city limits of Worthington on Nobles County 35. A pursuit ensued with speeds up to 70 miles per hour, and when officers attempted to stop Tyron, he evaded them, crossing U.S. 59/Minnesota 60 and crashing on a service road adjacent to the highway.

He was apprehended without incident and transported to Sanford Regional Hospital Worthington, where he was treated and released before being placed under arrest.

According to a press release, no Colonial Manor residents or staff were injured in the assault, though the building remained on lockdown for a time after the incident in order to preserve evidence.

Tyron's initial court appearance has been set for 3 p.m. Monday in Jackson County District Court. He has been granted a public defender.

He was also charged in March with misdemeanor disorderly conduct and fined, according to MNCIS, Minnesota's online court document filing system.
