SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — A Worthington dentist and resident active in community organizations has been accused of inappropriately touching female inmates during dental exams at a South Dakota county jail.

Andrew Heinisch, who practices dentistry at AppleWhite Dental Partners of Worthington, faces eight criminal charges related to alleged sexual contact of Minnehaha County Jail inmates and employees.

According to a press release from the Minnehaha County Jail, an investigation was initiated June 9 after a jail inmate reported to jail staff that she had been inappropriately touched while in the jail’s dental office. Throughout the investigation, five current and former Minnehaha County female inmates reported being inappropriately touched during dental exams.

Based on the investigation, a warrant was issued, charging the 37-year-old with two counts of sexual contact between a jail employee and an adult detainee, a class 6 felony; two counts of attempted sexual acts between a jail employee and an adult detainee, a class 6 felony; two counts of sexual contact without consent with a person capable of consenting, a class 1 misdemeanor; and two counts of attempted sexual contact without consent with a person capable of consenting, a class 1 misdemeanor.

He turned himself in Thursday, where he posted a $10,000 cash bond and was released. His initial court appearance is scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday.

According to the sheriff’s office, Heinisch has not been allowed to access the jail facility since the investigation was initiated.

Subcontracted through Armor Correctional Health Care, Heinisch has provided dental services to the Minnehaha County Jail since March 2016.

According to a doctor profile on AppleWhite Dental Partner’s web page, Heinisch has practiced dental hygiene at the Worthington clinic since graduating from dentistry school in 2014.

Heinisch also provides dental care at Our Lady of Guadalupe Free Clinic, is a Worthington Noon Kiwanis Club member and has also volunteered as a math teacher at the Worthington Area Learning Center.

According to the jail, the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office Detective Division is continuing to follow up on investigative leads as they develop.
