HERON LAKE — A 51-year-old Heron Lake faces multiple drug charges after his arrest early Friday.

Esteban Chavez-Cruz, 51, is charged with one felony count of controlled substance crime in the first degree, possession of methamphetamine, one felony count of fifth-degree possession of a controlled substance (marijuana) and two felony controlled substance crimes involving children, according to a Jackson County Sheriff’s Office press release.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation executed the search warrant at about 12:30 a.m. Friday at a residence owned by Chavez-Cruz in the 1400 block of Second Avenue. As a result of the search, approximately four pounds of meth, five pounds of marijuana, approximately $50,000 in cash and five guns were seized. The items were found in an upstairs bedroom in hidden compartments beneath the floor.

The HEAT team was deployed on the residence prior to the search, and Chavez-Cruz was not found inside. Chavez-Cruz was located after the search driving a van owned by him in the city of Heron Lake. A traffic stop was initiated, but Chavez-Cruz refused to exit the vehicle. The HEAT Team was again deployed, and Chavez-Cruz was arrested without incident. Authorities searched the van and located approximately two additional ounces of meth.

Six minor children were found inside the residence at the time the search warrant was executed. Street value of the methamphetamine found is about $80,000, while the approximate value of the marijuana is $7,500.

Chavez-Cruz remains in custody under a $250,000 bond.
