Letter: November is National Diabetes Month

By Casey Borgen, Community Wellness Partners, Diabetes Prevention & Health Systems Project Lead, Nobles County Community Services

Take a minute to think of the members in your immediate family. Odds are someone in your family, or someone you’re close with, has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. With 30.3 million Americans currently living with diabetes and another 86 million identified as being at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes, several local community organizations are working together to bring awareness to those with pre-diabetes and highlighting the fact that simple lifestyle changes today can result in a healthier tomorrow.

With November being National Diabetes Month and World Diabetes Day falling on Tuesday, Nov. 14, wellness champions in Worthington will be teaming up to offer knowledge, resources, and tips on how to prevent diabetes as well as how to live with diabetes. The staff of Community Wellness Partners (Cottonwood, Jackson and Nobles counties) are excited about bringing together local organizations to offer their knowledge and share their passion while having the opportunity to help people live well.

Early diagnosis and treatment are essential in preventing diabetes complications such as blindness, cardiovascular disease, kidney failure and lower-limb amputation. In addition to reducing feelings of isolation and uncertainty and increasing feelings of well-being and inclusion for patients with diabetes, improving diabetes awareness can also help reduce the enormous economic and social burdens associated with this chronic disease. Throughout November, we’ll not only be focusing on living well with diabetes, but also on the importance of preventing type 2 diabetes and other chronic conditions whenever possible.

Community Wellness Partners is also available to address any questions you may have regarding local program availability as well as connect you to additional resources as requested.
