Gloria Rae Widboom

Gloria Rae Widboom, age 72 of Worthington, MN, died peacefully on Monday, January 1, 2018. Gloria was born on November 9, 1945, in Hudson, SD, the daughter of Selmer and Selma Ekle. She was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church of rural Hudson. She grew up and attended school in Canton, SD. Gloria graduated in 1967 from General Beadle State Teacher's College of Madison, SD. Shortly thereafter she began her teaching career at West Elementary School in Worthington.

On August 9, 1969, Gloria Rae Ekle married John Vernon Widboom at Canton Lutheran Church in Canton. John and Gloria made their home on the farm north of Worthington for 43 years. Farm life was a great life where they raised their two sons, Matt and Aaron. Gloria was dedicated to her role as a hands-on mother, instilling values of kindness, responsibility, generosity and humility. She loved being outdoors, tending to her flower gardens and yard work. She was always willing to lend a cheerful hand as proud farm wife.

Gloria was a life-long member of First Lutheran Church, teaching Sunday school and bible school for many years. Many friendships were built and treasured through her involvement in project club and the Nobles County 4-H program. She accompanied John on multiple winter trips to the sunny south and soon loved to travel.

Gloria had a passion for education. She was a substitute teacher at Central and West Elementary Schools and returned to the field full time as a Hi-Ho Preschool teacher in 2001. She retired in 2012. After her retirement John and Gloria left the farm and moved to Worthington. She became a resident of the Ecumen Meadows Memory Care Center in September of 2017.

Gloria is survived by her husband of 48 years, John and her two sons, Matthew (Teresa) of rural Worthington and Aaron (Charisma) of Eagan, MN. Gloria cherished time with her 6 grandchildren; Riley, Wesley, Myranda, Charley, Dillon and Logan. She is also survived by 5 siblings; Norris (Linda) Ekle, Enola Kroger, Carolyn (Lee) Boyer, Rich (Elaine) Ekle and Nordell Ekle and her in-laws; Barbara (Art) Bowman, Jim (Jan) Widboom and Rose (Warren) Anderson. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother-in-law, Jim Kroger and an infant brother, Loren James.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, January 4, 2018, at 11:00 a.m., at the First Lutheran Church in Worthington, MN, with Pastor Jeanette McCormick officiating. Burial followed in the Worthington Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Benson Funeral Home in Worthington was in charge of the arrangements.
