A Celebration of the Life of Herbert Stromquist
Aug. 7, 1923 - Feb. 16, 2018
Surrounded by family, Herb passed away peacefully at the age of 94 in Mesa, Arizona. Born on the family farm near Freedhem, MN, Herb moved with his family to Minneapolis, where he spent his growing up years. Herb received his Master's degree in Education from the University of Minnesota. Herb met Lyla while both were working at Yellowstone National Park, and were married in 1951. Herb held positions in school districts in Minnesota and California, and from 1967 to 1985 was the principal of Central Elementary in Worthington. After retiring from Central, Herb and Lyla served in many Covenant churches in Alaska, spent winters in Mesa, AZ, and summers in Worthington. Herb loved music and often sang a cappella in church, senior centers, and at family weddings. Herb also loved the out-of-doors, swimming, playing shuffleboard, reading, and spending time with family and friends. His faith was strong, a very important part of his life. Herb was preceded in death by his wife Lyla; parents Roy and Ruth Stromquist; stepmother Hilma Stromquist; and brother Ray. He is survived by his children, Steven (Jane), Guy (Val), Karen (David) Dow, Lisa (Colleen), Christine (David) Swenson, Rhoda Shaw, 16 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 21, at First Covenant Church. Visitation at 10:30, Service at 11:30. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to First Covenant Church.
