Column: 'Tis the season to remember the reason

WORTHINGTON -- "Deck the halls with boughs of holly..."

Since the day after Thanksgiving, my family and I have noticed how quickly lights went up on homes and businesses in many communities. It seemed as though the minute Thanksgiving was officially over, at least according to the clock, the decorations emerged at breakneck speed, and we certainly wondered why. It could be that many are just in a particularly festive mood, or maybe the weather was perfect for putting up lights and thus avoiding the joy of frostbite nipping at your nose. Whatever the reason...

"'Tis the season to be jolly..." Not only did the lights and decorations go up but the music came out in home stereos, vehicles, and countless stores I've been to in recent weeks. I even had one store cashier wish me a "Merry Christmas," just barely into the first day or two of December. The only "Scrooge" and "Grinch" I've encountered has been on our TV, and in the days since Black Friday, I haven't been run over by any grumpy shoppers. I see a lot of smiling faces, and it sure seems as though everyone is jolly. Perhaps shoppers have gotten many good bargains already; or with weather so nice many are planning family trips between the holidays; maybe everyone is just thankful we haven't yet had to plow any snow.

Whatever the reason ...

Whatever the reason ... just what is the reason? Though I can't speak for any of our communities at large, I can certainly speak for the staff and students in our school. Sure, twinkling lights, festive music, good bargains and perfect weather are indeed reasons for being jolly. But at Worthington Christian School we have a better reason: our Savior, Jesus Christ. Let me share with you the remaining words to one of the songs our children are learning for their annual Christmas program. In 1995, a man by the name of Ken Bible shared a different perspective as part of a traditional favorite:

"Deck the halls with boughs of holly, fa la la la la la la la la. 'Tis the season to be jolly, fa la la la la la la la la.

"Fill the world with the sounds of Christmas, fa la la la la la la la la. Sing, for God himself is with us! Fa la la la la la la la la.

"See the Holy Child before us, fa la la la la la la la la. Rise and join the angel chorus, fa la la la la la la la la.

"God is good beyond all measure! Fa la la la la la la la la. Gave us everlasting treasure! Fa la la la la la la la la."

There is no better reason for joy than to know that God freely gave us the gift of His Son, to know that Jesus died on the cross for us and rose again, so that through faith in Him we can look forward to an everlasting treasure -- eternal life with Him in heaven. That's a promise God made, and one that He will never break.

It is a privilege to be able to share that promise with our students each day of the school year, and especially at Christmas.

Now they would like to share that promise with you in their program, "God's Christmas Promise," at 7:30 p.m. today in the Worthington Christian School gym.

Whatever your reason for being jolly this Christmas season, it is our prayer that the best reason is because you personally know Jesus as your Lord and Savior. Merry Christmas!
