Column: Trojans wrap up fall seasons, get set for winter
By Josh Dale, District 518
WORTHINGTON — The Worthington Trojan fall sports seasons came to a close last Saturday with the conclusion of the state cross country meet. The fall season was filled with memorable performances by many of our sports teams. The brightest performances were displayed by the boys soccer team and by cross country runner Adam Koller.
The boys’ soccer team finished the regular season going undefeated (15-0-1) and earning the Big South Conference title for the second consecutive year. They fought their way through Section 2A and advanced to the state tournament for the first time in school history. In the first round of the state tournament, they lost a challenging match against Orono 3-2 in overtime.
The boys and girls cross country teams competed the following week in the Section 2AA meet, where sophomore Adam Koller finished 13th and qualified for the state tournament. Koller proceeded to run a personal best at the state meet to finish the season.
Throughout the fall season players, fans and coaches were treated to outstanding performances by our sports teams. Many athletes earned all-conference, honorable mention, all-state academic and all-state tournament team honors. Beyond all the wins and accolades, our fall athletes will be walking away learning more about themselves and building character traits that will benefit them well into their future.
On the same day, the winter season was beginning when the girls hockey team traveled to Marshall for a conference scrimmage. The girls hockey team and dance team have been practicing for a few weeks preparing for their first competition/game. Girls basketball, gymnastics, boys hockey, middle school boys basketball will start their seasons on Monday, Nov. 13, with middle school girls basketball starting the following day. Boys basketball and wrestling start the next Monday, Nov. 20.
The new season brings a new set of expectations for the sports teams and a new level of excitement for our fans. The players, fans and coaches are gearing up for a great winter season. Come on out and support your Worthington Trojans. Up-to-date schedules may be found on our district website under activities.
