Editorial: Event Center fulfilling a community need

Efforts by city leaders to build the Worthington Event Center have clearly paid off.

Of course, the project wouldn’t have happened in the first place without support from voters, who in November 2008 approved a half-percent local sales tax referendum that funded the Event Center project as well as Memorial Auditorium expansion and renovations. Those voters wisely realized the needs an Event Center would fill in the community — and they’re being shown today just how those needs are being met.

0 Talk about it

For instance, the Event Center recently hosted the Daily Globe’s Bridal Show and Prom Extravaganza, and the event’s attendance was excellent (perhaps as a result of the new venue). It was home to an evening of comedy on Valentine’s Day, drawing a significant crowd. It was the site of the annual Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce annual meeting and dinner last month, as well as a first-ever New Year’s Eve celebration. On the horizon is a Farm and Home Show scheduled for this Friday through Sunday.

If these sorts of larger-scale happenings aren’t enough, Event Center manager Jackie Tentinger has said the facility is booked solid this summer for wedding receptions. In fact, the Event Center is capable of hosting a variety of festivities — and it’s here for all of us. That makes it a valuable community amenity.
