Letter: Visitor frustrated by construction detours

We would like to know WHAT YEAR, if ever, the road construction and detours will be completed in the Worthington area.

We frequently drive to and through Worthington for a variety of reasons — and when we come there, we spend money … on gas, groceries, restaurants, other retail shopping.

After this past weekend, we have tolerated the never-ending construction and poorly-marked detours for the last time. When heading north, we will head to Luverne or any other route that steers clear of Worthington.

Trunk Highway 59/60 is being reconstructed by the Minnesota Department of Transportation. According to MnDOT’s schedule, this is the last year that a detour will be required for the multi-phased project that includes completely reconstructing the highway through Worthington.

As you have experienced, this is the third year that traffic has been detoured within the city and the fourth year traffic has been detoured in the area.

Area businesses, MnDOT and the city have worked to minimize the project’s disruption of services, however, construction continues to generate confusion and frustration because of the extent and nature of the project.

Please bear with us a little longer. Local businesses are anxiously awaiting completion of the project so they can once again serve their customers as well as they would like to.
