Trojan boys, Cardinal girls win Class AA titles

WORTHINGTON — There is only one word to describe Worthington’s Travis Pedersen’s day at the 56th Annual Trojan Relays Thursday. Perfect. In his last home meet, the senior won all four events to lead Worthington to an overall team title in Class AA with 199 points. “It’s a great way to end a great year here,” Pedersen said. “All my time spent has really paid off by winning my last home meet. It really means a lot.”

MINNEOTA — The Fulda Raiders (205) and Adrian Dragons (212) captured second and third place, respectively, at Tuesday’s Minneota Viking Girls Invitational Golf Tournament. The Raiders and Dragons were edged by host Minneota, which won the event with a team score of 184. Lakeview placed fourth with 215 strokes, while Lincoln/HI (217) was fifth, Westbrook-Walnut Grove (220) sixth, Wabasso (226) seventh, MACCRAY (238) eighth and Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (242) ninth.

ELLSWORTH — After striking out five times in the first two innings, Worthington head coach Sam Baumgartner pulled his team aside before the start of the third. “It seemed like the first couple of innings we were pressing a little bit and chasing some pitches that were out of the zone,” Baumgartner said. “We talked about that in the third inning to make the pitcher shoot strikes and don’t chase anything. It seemed like we had better plate discipline after that.” Baumgartner’s advice paid dividends for the Trojans (4-8), as Worthington scored four runs in the third inning en route to a 7-2 victory over Adrian Area in a non-conference softball game Monday.

SLAYTON — Southwest Christian’s boys and Luverne’s girls won team titles at the Section 3A True Team Monday. With a total of 12 teams participating in each division, and with the high-scoring of the meet’s concept, team scores were in the triple digits. Winning seven events, including three relays, Luverne ran away with the girls’ team title, as the Cardinals racked up 675 points to repeat as true team sectional champions.

WORTHINGTON — When Albert Lea’s Sam Matheson woke up Saturday morning, he wasn’t sure that the Tiger golf team would be making the trip to the Worthington Invitational. Even on a windy, wet day, Matheson fired a 77 and defeated teammate Grant Stadheim for medalist honors.

ADRIAN — With a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Adrian Dragons defeated the Pipestone Area Arrows in a non-conference baseball game Saturday. The Dragons (10-1) trailed 4-3 heading into the bottom half of the last inning, but were able to score two runs to take the 5-4 victory.

Pfeifle paces Eagles to boys’ victory

WORTHINGTON — Every time Southwest Christian’s Nicholas Pfeifle and Worthington’s Travis Pedersen face each other, the competition is always fierce. “Every meet we have our eyes on each other because we can really compete against each other,” Pedersen said. “We always run really good times when we run against each other.” Each runner finished with a trio of first place finishes, but it was Pfeifle’s Eagles that edged Pedersen’s Trojans 163.5 to 161 for the team title Thursday at the Southwestern United Invitational. Windom (63.5 points) finished third while Westbrook-Walnut Grove/Red Rock Central (56 points) finished fourth.

SLAYTON — Scoring nine runs in the first two innings Thursday, the Adrian Dragons claimed a key Red Rock Conference baseball victory by defeating Murray County Central 13-3 in five innings. Ben Suedkamp led Adrian’s 13-hit offense with a 4-for-4 day that included two doubles and four RBIs. Adam Diekmann was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

WORTHINGTON — Only nine days until the 2008 fishing opener. This day is a very important day if you are a resort owner or an avid fisherman. There will be thousands of anglers on the water Saturday, and almost all of them will be fishing for one specific fish. That fish is the walleye.
