Eagle boys, Cardinal girls win 3A True Team titles
SLAYTON -- Southwest Christian's boys and Luverne's girls won team titles at the Section 3A True Team Monday.
With a total of 12 teams participating in each division, and with the high-scoring of the meet's concept, team scores were in the triple digits.
Winning seven events, including three relays, Luverne ran away with the girls' team title, as the Cardinals racked up 675 points to repeat as true team sectional champions.
Pipestone Area, the defending true team state champion finished a solid second with 561 points.
The Arrows will now hope that they win the wild-card meet, which computerizes the performances of all the sectional second-place teams.
PA qualified for last year's state meet by winning the wild-card event -- and then went to win the state title.
Windom's girls were third with 492 points, followed by Southwest Christian (474), Hills-Beaver Creek/Edgerton/Ellsworth (435), Adrian (402), Cedar Mountain/Comfrey/Springfield (401), Murray County Central (348), Southwestern United (320), Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (306), Wabasso (262) and Jackson County Central (249).
The boys' meet was much closer, as the top five teams all scored between 507 and 585 points.
After all the official scoring was figured, Southwest Christian -- which won six events (discus, 100, 200, 400, 1600, 3200) -- accumulated 585 points to claim the championship.
T-M-B, which won all three of the sprint relays and both hurdle events, edged MCC for second, 551-550.
H-BC/E/E won both the high jump and long jump, helping the Patriots claim fourth with 523 points.
JCC was a solid fifth with 507 points, followed by PA (464), Luverne (444), Adrian (443), CM/C/S (431), Windom (302), SWU (99) and Wabasso (7).
Luverne's girls and the Southwest Christian boys will automatically send their entire team to State True Team Meet at Stillwater May 17.
