JCC wins BEA invite; Adrian second

BLUE EARTH -- With a trio of second-place finishes, the Worthington wrestling team finished with 99 points at the Blue Earth Area Dick Maher Invite Saturday.

The Trojans finished in ninth position, while Jackson County Central finished first with 174 points, and Adrian claimed second with 168 points.

"We had some high points and some low points during the day," Worthington head coach Mark Prunty said. "We saw a lot of good things out of our kids. We had some kids that won matches by finishing strong in the third period, which is nice to see."

At 103 pounds, Jared Kinley finished second to Adrian's Ben Mulder.

Kinley defeated Maple River's Jesse Jaeger 8-6 in the semifinals, while Mulder defeated Brainerd's Luke Boran 2-1 to reach the finals.

"Jared upset the No. 1 seed in the semifinals," Prunty said. "This is his first year as a starter on varsity, so he was really excited and it's great for him to get into the finals in his first varsity tournament."

JCC's Kyle Edin finished sixth at 103.

At 160 pounds, Worthington's Tony Thier finished second to Madelia-Truman's Tucker Freeman.

Heavyweight Jordan Schroeder capped the Trojans' runner-up finishers after falling to Blue Earth Area's Jake Lee 5-2 in the finals.

"Tony and Jordan both took losses, but they were to ranked wrestlers," Prunty said. "I think that will be a motivation to both of them. They've wrestled some of the best kids in the state already in the first weekend of the year. That will be great motivation for them to continue to work hard in the room."

Adrian's Jake Tiede finished sixth at heavyweight.

At 112 pounds, Adrian's Nate Lynn finished second after losing a close 5-4 decision in the finals to M-T's Adam Cooling.

JCC's Anthony Pygman finished fourth.

Darick Vancura gave the Huskies a first place finish at 119 pounds, while Worthington's Kyle Wiese finished tied for fifth.

Bronson Steuber finished first at 125 pounds with a major decision, while Worthington's Eric Lease, who finished 4-1 on the day, claimed third.

JCC claimed a third place finish at 130 pounds from Patrick Hanson, while Jake Dorn (Adrian) and Spencer Johnson (JCC) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, at 135 pounds.

Taylor Menke (JCC) defeated Adrian's Luke Tiesler 5-2 in the finals at 140 pounds, while Cooper Moore (JCC) finished second and Tyler Sieve (Adrian) finished fifth at 145 pounds.

Adrian's Brock Bullerman placed third at 152 pounds, while JCC's Jordan Phibbs (second) and Adrian's Stephen Loosbrock (third) each placed at 171.

Dustin Polzine claimed fourth for Adrian at 189, while Dragon teammate Shea Klooster (second), Trojan Jake Steffl (fourth) and Huskie Jared Tirevold (sixth) each placed at 215.

Worthington will host Windom/Mountain Lake/Butterfield-Odin and Luverne Tuesday.
