BOYS' BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Cardinals use 15-3 run in final minutes to defeat Trojans, 66-55

FAIRMONT -- Travis Meinders hit a 3-pointer with just more than six minutes remaining Tuesday to give Worthington's boys' basketball team its first lead of the night, but Fairmont went on a 15-3 run to end the game and hand the Trojans a 66-55 non-conference loss.

It was the third consecutive win for Fairmont (11-4), which snapped Worthington's four-game winning streak.

"We didn't play very well," Worthington coach Ron Vorwald said. "I'm disappointed with the way we played. We need to play harder."

Meinders finished with 18 points, and Mike Vorwald and Aduo Omot each added 11 points for the Trojans.

Omot had 11 rebounds, and Vorwald added five assists.

Brennan Holm had a game-high 23 points, and Justin Walters added 20 for the Cardinals, who held a 33-29 advantage at halftime.

Jalen Voss had six points, Derek Busswitz had five, and Matt King and Zac Houselog each added two for the Trojans (14-3), who will host Pipestone Area on Friday.

LUVERNE -- Eric Stark scored 20 points, and Shelby Jones added 13 to lead Pipestone Area, which handed the Cardinals their fourth consecutive loss.

Bryce Beyers added 13 points for the Arrows, who led 33-22 at halftime.

Jon Fodness scored 14 points to lead Luverne (2-15, 1-6), which has lost 10 of its past 11 games.

Pipestone Area (7-8, 3-6) will travel to face Worthington on Friday, and Luverne will travel to face Marshall on Friday.

WESTBROOK -- Nicholas Pfeifle and Zach Huisken each scored 16 points to lead Southwest Christian to a 12-point victory over Westbrook-Walnut Grove.

Jared Mouw added 11 points, and Derek Tinklenberg had 10 for the Eagles, who went 25-for-30 from the free-throw line.

Mason Comnick scored a game-high 28 points, and Jace Jarmer had 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Chargers (11-5, 6-4), who will travel to face Ellsworth on Friday.

SWC (7-5, 5-4) will host Round Lake-Brewster on Friday.

MOUNTAIN LAKE -- Devin Kuehne scored 13 points, and Ben Gehl added 11 to lead the Raiders past Mountain Lake/Butterfield-Odin.

Isaac Hildebrandt had nine points and three steals for the Wolverines, who scored 18 points in the first half.

Fulda (7-8, 6-5), which won its second consecutive game, will host Southwest Star Concept on Friday.

ML/B-O (4-10, 1-7), which lost its third consecutive game, will travel to face Hills-Beaver Creek on Friday.

ROUND LAKE -- Halden Van Wyhe scored 18 points to lead Hills-Beaver Creek to a victory over Round Lake-Brewster.

Terence Reid added five rebounds, and Colton Bass had six assists for the Patriots, who won their ninth consecutive game.

Caleb Ellingson had five steals for H-BC, which recorded 26 as a team.

Dillon Hansen had 17 points, 19 rebounds and eight blocks, and Alex Busch added 10 points and eight rebounds to lead the Raiders, who lost their eighth consecutive game.

RL-B (1-13, 0-9) will host Murray County Central on Thursday, and H-BC (13-4, 7-3) will host Mountain Lake/Butterfield-Odin on Friday.

SLAYTON -- A pair of Dragons notched double-doubles in Adrian's 10-point victory in a Red Rock Conference game.

Brian Tjepkes had 27 points, 10 rebounds, four steals, four assists and three blocks to lead Adrian (12-2, 9-1).

Nate Reyne scored 16 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, while Danny Parsley had 11 points.

Jordan Kontz and Justin Weidert each had four assists.

MCC was led by Kyle DeLong's 21 points. Mark Bau added 12, while Tayler Streff had 10 for the Rebels.

Adrian will host Red Rock Central Friday.

CLARA CITY -- Shaun Condon scored 20 points to lead MACCRAY to a Camden Conference victory.

Aaron Frisvold and Brandon Kirk each scored 11 points for Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (12-5, 7-4), while Walker Schaar had nine points.

Josh Soupir had eight rebounds for the Panthers, while Chris Hansen added six rebounds. Dominic Dolan had four assists for T-M-B, which will host Lincoln HI Friday.

LAMBERTON -- Tom Nolte scored 18 points, grabbed nine rebounds and had three steals to lead the Ellsworth Panthers to a Red Rock Conference victory over the Red Rock Central Falcons Tuesday night.

Trevor Gruis charted 15 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and three shot blocks, and Matt Buntjer added 10 points and six rebounds for Ellsworth, which shot 52 percent (25-for-48) from the floor and limited RRC to 20 percent (7-for-35).

Tyler Erickson led RRC (4-10, 2-7) with 12 points. The Falcons were outrebounded by a 34-16 margin.

Ellsworth (13-2, 9-0) hosts Westbrook-Walnut Grove Friday, while RRC visits Adrian the same night.

EDGERTON -- Leading 45-41 with about a minute left in the second half Tuesday night, Southwest Star Concept received a pair of free throws from Kirk McBreen and a three-point play from Ben Scheevel in the final seconds to seal a Red Rock Conference victory over the Edgerton Flying Dutchmen.

Scheevel finished with 15 points and eight rebounds, while William Cranston also scored 15 points, and Jeremy Crocker dished out six assists for the Quasars (10-4, 6-3).

Alex Elgersma led Edgerton (4-6, 6-8) with nine points.

Both teams play Friday, as SSC visits Fulda, and Edgerton is at Murray County Central.

REDWOOD FALLS -- Scoring 46 points in each half, the Redwood Valley Cardinals sprinted past the Marshall Tigers in a key Southwest Conference game.

The Cardinals (13-3, 8-1) now have a half-game lead over Worthington (7-1 in SWC) in the league standings, while Marshall (12-6, 5-3) is now 2.5 games back.

Mike Felt and Sam Knudsen combined to score 55 points for Redwood, as Felt (nine rebounds, six assists) nailed five 3-pointers on the night and scored 18 of his game-high 28 points in the second half.

Knudsen hit seven treys (six in the first half and four to start the game) and finished with 18 of his 27 points before halftime.

Trevor Goblirsch and J.T. Radel scored 16 and 11 points, respectively, for the Cardinals.

Taylor Hedman led Marshall with 24 points.
