State Class AAA Girls Basketball: New Prague advances past Worthington

MINNEAPOLIS - In an exciting game that came down to the final minute, the top-seeded New Prague Trojans advanced with a 54-50 victory against Worthington in Wednesday's Class AAA state girls' basketball tournament quarterfinal game.

Worthington finishes its season 24-3.

New Prague, which never had a bigger lead than nine points, advances to the Class AAA semifinals, tomorrow at noon.

Trailing by two, 50-48, Worthington had a key defensive 10-second count and looked for a basket.

Worthington's Kaitlin Gerber drove down the lane and found Martha Alwal for a basket, tying the game at 50-all.

However, that would be the final point of the game for the Trojans.

New Prague's (26-4) Maggie Weiers hit a shot with 1:25 remaining to give NP a two point lead.

With less than one minute remaining, NP's Rena Kneeland connected on two free throws, pushing the lead to four, 54-50.

Worthington couldn't find the basket in the final minute, falling in the first-round of the state tournament.

Kayla Vander Veen hit five3-pointers in the game and finished 17 points to lead Worthington. Gabby Boever had 11 first-half points and scored 16 in the game. Holli Aggen scored nine points, while Martha Alwal finished with six points and had a game-high 20 rebounds and 11 blocks.

Hannah Strop had 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Weiers added 13 points (6 of 22 from the field) and 12 rebounds for the New Prague Trojans.

Worthington was 18 of 64 from the field (28 percent), 8 of 23 from the 3-point line and 6 of 11 from the free-throw line.

New Prague was 21 of 58 from the field (36 percent), 3 of 7 from the 3-point line and 9 of 18 from the line.

NP had a 49-44 rebounding advantage and had 18 turnovers compared to Worthington's 17.

Game tied at 48

Worthington's Kayla Vander Veen connected on her fifth 3-pointer of the game, giving her 17 points, tying Wednesday's Class AAA state girls' basketball tournament game at 48-all with 4:11 remaining.

New Prague leads Worthington at halftime

The New Prague Trojans jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in Wednesday morning's Class AAA girls' state basketball quarterfinals.

Worthington would rally, but in a back-and-forth first half, New Prague has a 32-25 lead.

After falling behind 7-0 in the first four minutes, Worthington's Gabby Boever hit a jump shot from the baseline, pulling the Trojans within five points.

Kayla Vander Veen later hit a trey from the left corner, tying the game at 10-all with 12:05 remaining in the first half.

Boever, who has 11 first-half points, gave Worthington its first lead of the game, 13-12 on Worthington's next possession.

Vander Veen and Holli Aggen each scored five points.

In the first half, Worthington is shooting 9 of 29 from the field, 3 of 11 from 3-point land, and 4 of 9 from the free-throw line.

New Prague, which holds a 27-18 rebounding advantage, was 12 of 31 from the field, 1 of 3 from behind the arc and 7 of 11 from the free-throw line.

In a relatively clean game, Worthington has turned the ball over six times, while New Prague has seven turnovers.
