PREP VOLLEYBALL: Worthington outlasts Fairmont in 5-game match

FAIRMONT -- In five close games, the Worthington volleyball team battled to a narrow victory Monday night in a non-conference match against Fairmont.

After losing the first game 25-22, the Trojans (7-3) rallied for a 25-20 victory.

However, the Cardinals won Game 3, 25-23 before WHS won the fourth set, 25-21.

In the fifth set, WHS finished the victory with a 16-14 win.

Tiffany Harberts had 16 kills to lead Worthington, while Martha Alwal had 14 kills and five blocks.

Kristen Andersen had seven kills, eight digs and was 19-for-20 serving with two aces.

Taylor Heidebrink was 20-for-23 serving with three aces. She also had 11 set assists and nine digs.

Courtney Meier was 12-for-12 serving with three aces, while Meagan Meier had a team-best 20 set assists.

Paige Westphal had three blocks for the Trojans, who will host Marshall Thursday in a key Southwest Conference clash.

Luverne 3, Edgerton 0

EDGERTON -- Katlyn Sawtelle had 14 kills and six block assists to lead Luverne to a sweep of Edgerton Monday night.

Game scores were 25-16, 25-17 and 25-18.

Kat Dahl had nine kills and seven digs for the Cardinals (8-5-1), while Mikki Fitzer was a perfect 16-for-16 serving with three aces to go along with seven digs.

Alyssa Stegenga was 12-for-14 serving with four aces. She also had 10 digs and nine kills, while Sundra Xaphakdy was 8-for-9 serving with one ace. She also had seven digs and six block assists.

Paige Olson had 21 set assists while Gretchen Nowatzki had eight for Luverne, which travels to Pipestone Area Thursday.

Kelsey Wolthuizen had five kills to lead Edgerton (3-5), while Racheal Steffl had four.

Allie Brockhouse had eight digs and Macy Butson had 14 set assists for the Flying Dutchmen, who host Ellsworth tonight.

Adrian 3, ML/G-H-EC 1

ADRIAN -- Behind 12 kills and six ace serves from Karli Meyer, the Adrian Dragons won a non-conference match against Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain.

Game scores were 25-18, 25-17, 15-25 and 25-15.

Karlee Jackson had nine kills, two ace blocks and two ace serves for the Dragons (3-7), while Sydne Springman had five kills, two ace blocks, four ace serves and nine set assists.

Marriah Wieneke had five kills, Hilary Voss had two ace blocks and Nichole Loosbrock had 23 set assists to lead Adrian. Defensively, Trysten Lange had 13 digs.

Adrian will host Red Rock Central tonight.

Springfield 3, ML/B-O 0

SPRINGFIELD -- Macy Svalland led Mountain Lake/Butterfield-Odin with four kills, but Springfield was too much in a 25-12, 25-16, 25-20 sweep.

Nikki Sawatzky had three kills, while Brette Pankratz had four solo blocks for the Wolverines.

Chelsey Kraemer was 11-for-12 serving, while Kaitlin Feil was 8-for-9 for the Wolverines, who host Murray County Central tonight.
