AMATEUR BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Barnstormers open season with 7-2 win, 2-2 tie in St. Peter

ST. PETER -- The Southwest Barnstormers baseball team opened its season with a strong 7-2 victory against the Jordan Millers on Sunday, but the team's nightcap against St. Peter ended in a 2-2 tie.

Mike Wenninger picked up the win for Southwest against Jordan, striking out eight batters and walking five in his five innings of work. Sam Baumgartner struck out six in the final two innings and allowed only one hit.

Kevin Nowotny led the Barnstormers on offense by going 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Wenninger and Dan Blankenship were both 2-for-4.

Rob Petersen pitched seven effective innings for Southwest against St. Peter (six hits, two runs, four walks and six strikeouts), but the Barnstormers weren't able to push the winning run across despite recording 11 hits compared to St. Peter's six hits.

Baumgartner was 3-for-5 in the game for Southwest with an RBI, Micky Sehr was 2-for-4 and drove in the team's other run and Petersen and Todd Armstrong were both 2-for-3.

The Barnstormers (1-0-1) play against the Pipestone amateur team in Pipestone Sunday at 6 p.m.

Hadley 18, Dumont 8

HADLEY -- A nine-run third inning gave Hadley the lead for good in a victory against Dumont on Saturday.

Justin Reinsma picked up the victory for the Buttermakers (five innings pitched) and Alex Van't Hof pitched the final two innings.

Alex Petersen (4-for-4) and Eric Wieneke (3-for-4) each had a double, a triple and three RBI for Hadley. James Wajer was 2-for-3 with two RBI and Derek Platt was 2-for-5 with an RBI and also scored three runs.

Wilmont 8, Hadley 2

HADLEY -- Wilmont's Justin Saufley pitched seven shutout innings and hit a two-run home run to lead his team to a comfortable win against Hadley on Sunday.

Saufley (six hits, seven strikeouts) picked up the win, with Joe Ahrens (two innings pitched, two hits, three strikeouts) finishing out the game on the mound for the Cardinals.

Zach Bruns, Alex Van't Hof and Luke Schneider combined on the mound for the Buttermakers.

Stuart Rogers was 3-for-4 on the day for Wilmont, Steven Kremer was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Lucas Henning and Jesse Teerink each recorded a double. Saufley finished 3-for-4 at the plate.

Alex Petersen led Hadley by going 3-for-4 at the dish with a double and an RBI and Max Zwart also recorded a double.

The Buttermakers (3-3, 2-2) are at Adrian on Wednesday and at Pipestone on Thursday.

Windom 13, Tracy 3

WINDOM -- Windom pitchers Kody Johnson and Nick Kulseth combined to limit Tracy to three runs on six hits and four Windom hitters notched at least three hits in a convincing victory for the Pirates against the Express.

Johnson (three runs, five hits, five strikeouts, three walks) pitched the first six innings to pick up the victory and Kulseth (no runs, one hit, one strikeout) pitched the final two innings.

Tyler Knutson was 4-for-5 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored for the Pirates, Kody Johnson was 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI, Kirby Johnson was 4-for-5 with a double and three RBI and Joel Riordan was 3-for-4 with a double, two stolen bases and three runs scored.

Robbie Slinkman led Tracy by going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Windom hosts Heron Lake on Tuesday.

LUVERNE -- Ethan Duffy and Chad Knutson combined to throw a no-hitter Saturday afternoon, and the Heron Lake Lakers rallied with 10 runs in the top of the seventh inning to claim a victory over the Adrian A's at the Luverne Redbirds Buffalo Days amateur baseball tournament at Redbird Field.

Duffy started and pitched three and two-thirds innings for Heron Lake, issuing 10 walks that helped Adrian score four runs -- including three in the fourth on six free passes.

Knutson came on in relief and hurled the final three and one-third innings, retiring seven straight batters before the A's scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh to complete the game's scoring.

Evan Place led the Lakers at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, two singles and two RBIs. Knutson (RBI single, double) and Octavio Jimenez (two RBI singles) cracked two hits apiece for Heron Lake.

Lon Eichenberger (two-run single) and Eric Milbrath (triple, three RBIs) had the other run-producing hits for the Lakers, while Lucas Knutson and Kirk McBreen each added a single.

Adrian's Jason Stubbe had a perfect game going through four and one-third innings, retiring all 13 batters that he faced in that span. He pitched into the seventh before being relieved by Dru Strand.

Matt Gades coaxed three bases on balls, and Cody Kontz drew a pair of walks for Adrian, which defeated Luverne by a score of 7-2 earlier Saturday.

LUVERNE -- Eric Kor and Brian Beuning combined to strike out 14 batters Saturday night, as the Luverne Redbirds held off the Heron Lake Lakers in the final game of pool play during the Luverne Redbirds Buffalo Days amateur baseball tournament at Redbird Field.

Kor (eight strikeouts) limited Heron Lake to a pair of unearned runs on six hits and no walks in five-plus innings before the Lakers loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth. Beuning then came on and fanned the next three batters to end the threat before striking out the side in order during the seventh to pick up an impressive save.

Beuning and Phil Paquette (double) each had two hits for the Redbirds, and James Fisher clubbed a two-run double in the first. Taylor VanSanten had Luverne's other hit, while Beuning and Zach Olson each had an RBI groundout.

Lon Eichenberger tossed a complete game for the Lakers, striking out seven batters and allowing four runs on six hits and four walks.

Kirk McBreen was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles for Heron Lake, while Eichenberger, Ethan Duffy (RBI), Evan Place and Alex Meyer each singled, as well.

LUVERNE -- Pounding out a total of 14 hits -- including four doubles in a six-run third inning -- the Renner (S.D.) Monarchs won the championship game of the Luverne Redbirds Buffalo Days amateur baseball tournament with a seven-inning, 10-run rule victory over the Heron Lake Lakers Sunday night.

Perennial powers in South Dakota, the Monarchs extended a 6-0 lead to 8-0 on a two-run home run by Jason Nyhus in the bottom of the fourth. Renner added a run in the fifth and plated three more runs in the sixth to complete the game's scoring.

Brian McGuire (4-for-5), Chad Moreland (3-for-4), Matt Guiliano (2-for-4) and Andrew Jenkins (2-for-3) each had multi-hit performances for the Monarchs, with Moreland earning the win on the mound by fanning nine batters and allowing two hits and two walks in six shutout innings.

Ben Scheevel, Evan Place and Chad Knutson handled the pitching duties for Heron Lake, while Kirk McBreen and Eric Milbrath collected the only hits for the Lakers.

Heron Lake (5-6) plays at Windom Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.
