LEGION BASEBALL: Luverne places 4th in Legion baseball state tournament
ELY -- The Luverne Legion baseball team had the ingredients to beat Ely on Friday in the semifinals of the Legion baseball state tournament, but some costly mental errors from Post 123 gave Ely an early lead and an eventual 8-4 victory.
Luverne then went on to lose 7-6 to LaCrescent in the third-place matchup to finish fourth in the tournament, while Ely lost 15-3 to Eden Valley-Watkins in the championship game.
Ely took a 4-0 lead with a four-run second inning that was fueled b a pair of Luverne errors and some general mental misplays. Though Luverne cut the deficit to 4-3 in the next half inning, Ely was able to hold onto the lead.
John Fodness (5 2/3 innings pitched, eight hits, six earned runs, eight walks) started for Luverne, with Cody Christensen recording the final out for Post 123 on the mound.
Luverne had five players record two hits apiece in the contest: Fodness (run), Joey Slieter (run), Eric Kor (RBI), Christensen (RBI) and Nick Rittenhouse.
Post 123's offense was hampered with two players getting thrown out at the plate in the contest.

LaCrescent 7, Luverne 6
Though Luverne took a one-run lead after the game reached extra innings, LaCrescent responded with a walk-off victory in the third-place matchup of the Legion baseball state tournament on Saturday.
Despite Luverne taking three separate leads in the contest, LaCrescent was able to respond on every occasion.
In the top of the eighth inning Post 123 scored when Joey Slieter led off with a double, was sacrificed over by Richard Gonzalez and came home on a single by Eric Kor.
However, LaCrescent rallied for two runs in the bottom of the frame.
Cody Christensen pitched the first seven innings for Luverne (six hits, five earned runs, six walks, one strikeout), with Eric Kor taking the loss after relieving Christensen during the eighth.
Slieter (2-for-4, two runs, RBI), Kor (1-for-3, two RBI) and Connor Fitzer (1-for-2, two runs) paced the attack for Post 123.
Luverne finished its season with a 12-5 record.
