PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Maras, Bunting lead Falcons to 43-6 win; W-WG falls

LAMBERTON -- Daniel Maras rushed for 202 yards and Dylan Bunting completed 12 of 21 passes for 195 yards -- including a trio of touchdown passes to Jeff Decock -- Friday night, as Red Rock Central rolled to a 43-6 Southern Minnesota Conference victory over Southwestern United.

Neither team scored in the first quarter, but the Falcons (3-3) exploded for 29 points in the second quarter and then added another touchdown in both the third and fourth periods.

SWU (0-6) gained a season-high 170 yards rushing, including 73 on 15 carries by Luke Henkels, who scored the Wildcats' lone touchdown on a 43-yard burst midway through the second quarter.

RRC capped an impressive 88-yard drive early in the second quarter with a nine-yard touchdown pass from Bunting to Decock (four catches, 67 yards) and Mitchell Schroepfer booted the first of five (out of six) extra-point kicks for the Falcons, giving the hosts a 7-0 lead.

After a pair of penalties backed up the Wildcats, SWU was called for intentional grounding -- on an attempted pass attempt from the end zone -- resulting in a two-point safety for the Falcons.

RRC increased its lead to 16-0 when Bunting hooked up with Decock on a 44-yard scoring strike.

Henkels' touchdown run trimmed the gap to 16-6, but the Falcons quickly answered with a five-play drive, capped by an 11-yard touchdown run from Maras.

Then with just 21 seconds left in the first half, RRC culminated a sustained 97-yard drive with a six-yard TD pass from Bunting to Decock.

Bunting scored a third-quarter three-yard touchdown, which was set up by an interception by Taylor Keairnes.

Maras crossed the goal line again in the fourth quarter on a six-yard run. Schroepfer kicked the PAT after both second-half RRC touchdowns.

Logan Willhite (five catches, 74 yards) and Jesse Rogotzke (three catches, 54 yards) also had big receiving games for the Falcons, while Sam Halter and Bunting both intercepted passes for RRC, which picked a trio of Wildcat throws.

Kurt Schmitz (10 rushes for 50 yards) and Justin Jass (three carries, 10 yards) also contributed to SWU's ground game. But, the Wildcats gained only 20 yards through the air, completing just three of 15 pass attempts.

SWU travels to Sleepy Eye St. Mary's next Friday, while RRC hosts Wabasso.
